► 15 October 2012 - Cambodia former king Norodom Sihanouk dies aged 89
►
King of the highly respected and revered by his people died of a heart attack. According to Prince Sisowath Thomico - a member of the royal family who was also his assistant - Sihanouk was known as a highly important role in Cambodian politics.
During his lifetime, he witnessed the transformation of power from the French colony to the kingdom of Cambodia on 9 November 1953. But during a visit to Beijing on 18 March 1970, the leadership was taken over by Cambodian Prime Minister General Lon Nol and his cousin Prince Sosiwath Sirik Matak through a military coup.
After he was overthrown, Sihanouk settled in Beijing and formed the National United Front of Kampuchea (NUFK) to support the Khmer Rouge to overthrow the government of Lon Nol. When the Khmer Rouge came to power, he was appointed as head of state of Cambodia in the period 1975-1976.
Since coming to power in 1941, Sihanouk had a lot of positions and he was listed in the guinness Book of World Records. He was a king of Cambodia for two periods (1941-1955 and 1993-2004), he became a prince of the ruling twice, he was president for one term, served as prime minister twice and had a lot of office while he was in exile.
Cambodia will miss him. During his life, he continued to fight for the nation and Cambodia's people.
