Health experts warn that obesity is increasing worldwide, especially in the United States and Britain. A new study published in the medical journal The Lancet says 1.5 billion adults are overweight and half billion people are overweight.
Obesity is also increasing among children all over the world, where 170 million children are considered overweight or obese.
The researchers said if current trends continue, about half of American men and women will be obese by 2030.
Experts also predict that in Britain, obesity rates will rise in the same period from 26 percent today on men and women, to 48 percent in men and 43 percent women.
They said the increase is likely to lead to an increase in the number of people with diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other diseases, thereby increasing the cost of health care.
According to the study, in low-income countries, obesity tends to affect middle-aged adults, particularly women in urban and affluent areas.
In high-income countries, obesity affects men and women of all age groups, but the proportion is not balanced on the disadvantaged.
Scientists say the problem of obesity triggered by changes in the global food system that produces more processed food and more affordable than ever before, and the market economy, which triggers excessive consumption. The increase in food consumption is also often accompanied by increased more sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise.
Health experts urged governments to lead efforts to address the epidemic of obesity with policy interventions to groups affected communities, such as setting the tax on unhealthy foods and beverages.
