Pelican eats bird. Uploaded on Nov 6, 2006

Amazing! Bird sounds from the lyre bird - David Attenborough - BBC wildlife. Uploaded on Feb 12, 2007 by BBCWorldwide

A Brown Pelican Gets a Bath. Oiled birds are not waterproof. The cold water of oceans, rivers, and lakes will penetrate their oiled feathers and reach their skin. The cold water quickly chills the bird, lowering his temperature dramatically, a death sentence. Waterproof feathers insulate birds against heat and cold and allow them to thermoregulate, keeping their body temperature within a safe range.Sometimes birds are oiled by fuel oil (as in the Cosco Busan Oil Spill), algae blooms, or even sitting on oily fish.

This California Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis californicus) is not very soiled, so he requires only two tubs of "soapy" water. We use Dawn detergent, which is donated by Proctor and Gamble. The detergent does a good job of removing oily substances, does not burn delicate skin, and rinses clean. After the bird is washed, he is thoroughly rinsed with an oxygenated showerhead. The water in the tubs and shower is very warm, ensuring that the birds do not become cold during the process. As his feathers are rinsed, they are no longer matted down. They stand up and look dry, as the water runs off of them. This is the first step in waterproofing.

After his shower, he is wrapped in a sheet and taken to a large pelican box with a special fan to blow warm air at him. He then begins to preen his feathers, the final step in waterproofing. Note how the techs hold the pelican's bill. Pelicans do not have nares (nostrils), so they must breathe through their mouths. The tech is very careful to hold the bill in such a way that it is open, not closed. The entire washing/rinsing procedure is not shown in this video, as it would be too long for YT. Uploaded on Aug 17, 2009 by MyWildlifeVideos ||| Storm Battered Brown Pelicans Admitted to Hospital. The relentless storms and torrential rains in California are impacting pelicans and the number of wet, cold and often hypothermic birds arriving at our centers is growing rapidly.

International Bird Rescue Research Centers rehabilitation clinics in San Pedro near Los Angeles Harbor and Fairfield, near San Francisco Bay, are currently taking in many wet and cold brown pelicans. Our Los Angeles center has rescued 40 birds in the past 48 hours and more are being captured. Our Fairfield center in California has also received approximately 40 birds, and that number is also growing. We expect to have about 100 wet and cold brown pelicans.

Like all water birds, pelicans have waterproof feathers that allow them to float and stay insulated from weather changes. Waterproof feathers also allow them to fly and plunge feed for fish. Brown pelicans tend to feed and congregate near harbors and river mouths where nutrients from the runoff attract fish and other creatures. Pelicans can easily become dirty from pollution in these areas and can lose their waterproofing. The current massive runoff from the storms has brought even more grease, car oil sheen, fish oils and other forms of surface pollution into the coastal areas where these birds feed. Many brown pelicans have been found soaking wet and hypothermic. Since the storms keep coming, one after another, the wet birds do not have time to dry off and feed and succumb to hypothermia.

The silver lining in this scenario is that the majority of these birds respond very well to being washed and rehabilitated. Jay Holcomb, Executive Director, IBRRC. These birds need to be washed. About half were washed on January 24. Birds also received medication, as needed. Some had injuries.

Woman reveals new face after successful transplant. Massachusetts women reveals new face after receiving a successful face transplant. Walking proudly in front of reporters and cameras, Carmen Blandin Tarleton shows off her new face. The 44-year old mother of two received a face transplant in February of this year after being burned with industrial strength lye by her now ex husband. Tarleton said the transplant instantly relieved the pain she suffered in her neck area. (SOUNDBITE) (English) TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT CARMEN BLANDIN TARLETON, SAYING, "That was my biggest desire - was to have all the pain in my neck relieved and I got that instantly. I know my face will improve over the next months and in the first year, so I am not anxious or anything of that not happening. I know that's going to happen. So it's just a heaven sent - I'm so much more comfortable today than I have ever been in the last six years." A team of doctors and surgeons worked for about 17 hours to complete the surgery. The lead transplant surgeon said Tarleton's case was special because her immune system had already rejected the donor tissue at the time of transplant. (SOUNDBITE) (English) TRANSPLANT SURGEON DR. BOHDAN POMAHAC SAYING "Together with our colleagues in transplant medicine we were able to work through our plan to get Carmen where she is today almost miraculously with no apparent sign of rejection." Doctors say Tarleton will eventually gain control over her face muscles and sensation will gradually return to her face. Julie Noce reports.
Assad urges his supporters to "remain fearless"
Let Assad taking care of the conflict in Syria as Afghanistan attempts to tackle the Taliban and its alliances. Done! There is no war but internal conflict only. Done! It's like you take care of the condition of a home life where you can not be the parents of unruly children in the family. Let the parents take care of their own families in a process of growth and development of their children. Conflict in the family is the other side of how a unity talks. I know what I'm saying is just an example, but you will understand how to manage a country with a simple concept of managing the integrity of a family.

Chevy Impala: New thinking from an old horse ||Unimog, the monster Mercedes

2014 Chevy Impala First Drive Review. The new 2014 Chevy Impala represents a modern version the classic big American Sedan. Of course the big difference being that unlike Chevrolet Impalas of the 1950's and 1960's the new 2014 Chevy Impala is front-wheel-drive instead of RWD. In this TFL(http://www.tflcar.com/)car first drive review we spend some quality time with the big GM ride getting to know the new Impala in San Diego, California. With a 3.6L engine that puts out 305 HP, the new Impala is certainly not underpowered, but is it better than the old car which GM mainly sold to rent-a-car fleet and commercial customers. You'll have to watch this first drive review to find out. Published on Mar 16, 2013 by romanmicagearguy   || 2014 Chevrolet Impala LTZ - Interior Walkaround - 2012 LA Auto Show. Anti-Muslim violence flares up in Myanmar. At least one person was killed, ten people were injured and hundreds of homes and shops in Muslim neighbourhoods were burned as angry Buddhist mobs turned violent in central Myanmar. Two mosques were also destroyed in the Okkan village, which is about a hundred kilometres north of Yangon. The latest anti-Muslim violence in Myanmar was reportedly sparked Tuesday by a collision between a Muslim woman and a Buddhist monk walking on a street. Buddhist mobs were seen hurling bricks at buildings and police were called in to contain the violence. Eighteen people are reported to have been arrested. Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler reports from Bangkok.

Conflicting death tolls in Nigeria violence. Al Jazeera has obtained evidence that the number of people killed in recent fighting between Nigerian security forces and an armed group in the north could be far higher than officially reported. The Nigerian Army is standing by its claim that no more than 36 people died when its soldiers fought with Boko Haram fighters in Borno state. But locals and aid organisations say as many as 200 people were killed in the violence. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege, one of the only television journalists to have gained access to the area, reports from Baga, Nigeria.

Women smokers more likely to get colon cancer. For many years doctors have been aware that smoking affects men and women in different ways. Recently, they say, there has been a surge in the number of cases of colon cancer. Now a team of Norwegian researchers says women smokers are specifically at risk. The researchers looked into the medical histories of more than 600,000 people over the course of 30 years.  So far doctors cannot explain why smoking seems to attack the female digestive system more aggressively than the male. One leading cancer specialist says this new research is a warning to women.  Al Jazeera's Dominic Kane explains.

[Every day I read the news. Every day I marvel at the progress of science and technology, but every day I also do not understand why we do not have the same awareness of the importance of health when compared with the pleasure in smoking. Maybe I'm a fool to think that modern societies are those who do not smoke. And the worse thing is, I think I'm living in a modern civilization.]

Gauging Hezbollah's Syria role. Saying it has "real friends in the region", Hassan Nasrallah, secretary general of the Lebanese-Shia group Hezbollah, has promised not to let the government of neighbouring Syria fall. Nasrallah's televised address on Wednesday angered the Syrian opposition who have accused his group of supplying assistance to the forces of Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president.

In his speech, which came after two bomb attacks in the Syrian capital, Nasrallah called the armed opposition too weak to succeed in its two-year-long fight against Assad. In an already volatile region, what does the admission of Hezbollah - Lebanon's most powerful political and military organisation - assistance to Assad's forces mean for the neighbouring nations? As the conflict in Syria rages past its second year, how important is Hezbollah's involvement?

Joining Stephen Cole on this Inside Story, to discuss the report are guests: Kamel Waznee, founder and director of the Centre for American Strategic Studies in Beirut; Louay Safee, from the political office of the Syrian National Coalition; and Nicholas Noe, Mid-EastWire.com founder.

Will Obama close Guantanamo? The closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre was a top priority for Barack Obama during his first term as the US president, but since he began his second term, Obama has barely spoken of Guantanamo. The prison in Cuba was also left largely out of the public discourse in the United States. But a now three-month-long hunger strike by more than 100 detainees has changed that.

As the strike by detainees protesting their indefinite detention continues, the Pentagon has cleared the force feeding of 20 detainees, a move supported by Obama. But the American Medical Association, the largest association of US physicians, has sent a letter to Chuck Hagel, US secretary of defense, protesting against the force feedings, saying they violate medical ethics.

"We urge you to ensure that this matter receives prompt and thorough attention to address any situation in which a physician may be asked to violate the ethical standards of his or her profession," read the AMA letter. But one Pentagon spokesman told Carol Rosenberg, Miami Herald reporter, that it is "un-American" to let a detainee starve and that it "violates the very code of civilised peoples everywhere".

So, has the strike finally tipped the scales so that it is finally time for justice to be done? Inside Story Americas, with presenter Shihab Rattansi, discusses with guests Vincent Iacopino, senior media advisor for Physicians for Human Rights; John Knefel, independent journalist and Vincent Warren, Center for Constitutional Rights executive director.

Iraq PM condemns spread of sectarianism. Police in Iraq's Anbar Province have imposed an evening curfew and have given protesters an ultimatum - find the killers of four soldiers in the next 24 hours or there will be consequences. Weeks of anti-government protests has boiled over into violence and anger in the past five days. More than 200 people have died in the fighting. Al Jazeera's Omar al Salah reports from Baghdad.

Need to confirm the existence of a real effort to disintegration of the countries in region by Turkey by using the elements internally. (Ahmet Davutoglu - Iraq Nouri al-Maliki): A number of elements in Iraq provoked by Turkey, and Ankara wants to spread the ethnic slander and sectarian in Iraq. The Iraqi people have to understand the purpose and target of Turkey, namely the overthrow of government and disintegration of Iraq. Therefore, Turkey has lost its place among Iraqis. Touching upon Turkey's double standards political towards Kurdistan, I think Turkish government oppresses Kurdistan and taking away their freedom. But they provoke the Kurds of Iraq. Ankara also has violated Iraqi law by signing an agreement to buy oil directly from Kurdistan without involving the central government in Bahghdad. It has been proven to the Iraq people, that the anti-government demonstrations in recent time is the result of Turkey provocation.

Abigail & Brittany Hensel - The Twins Who Share a Body. Although they are two completely separate people, these accomplished teens share a body and have just two arms and legs between them.

Born in 1990, the girls have been brought up in a small, tightly knit community in Minnesota, almost completely protected from prying eyes and inquisitive stares. To their friends and family, they are distinct people with very different personalities, needs, tastes and desires. But to the outside world they are a medical mystery -- particularly given the fact that they can do virtually all the same things as their friends, including playing the piano, riding a bike, swimming and playing softball "Their personalities make them inspirational," says their mother Patty. "They never give up; anything they want to do, they go out and do it."

The medical world is keen to find out how two separate brains and nervous systems can work in such a perfectly co-ordinated way, but the twins and their family have always resisted non-essential medical tests. "The family want to treat them as though they are just like everyone else," says Joy Westerdahl, the girls' doctor, who admits that it is a mystery how their unique physiology functions.

As they enter adulthood, the twins are likely to leave the haven of their home town and face the wider world. In preparation for that time, they have taken part in this intimate documentary to show the world what it is like to be joined for life.

Video: Two-headed monster snake scares Moscow Zoo visitors. Video: RT Ruptly's exclusive, for licensing contact

A rare two-headed albino snake is on display in Moscow Zoo. Scientists say it is so rare it would not be able to survive in the wild. The snake was born six years ago and zoo keepers hope it will live for another six years. It is unusual for such a reptile to live for more than 12 or 15 years due to the genetic mutation which makes it more susceptible to diseases. Zoo keepers have to feed the two-headed reptile two times a week, which is more than the other species of reptiles at the zoo.

"Thank you for your perception! I like your romantic side, even if I do not always comment and I'm glad that you're in my circle of friends."
(Courtesies by: Wolfgang A. Gerhardt)

Wolfgang A.Gerhardt : May be you like this Sunday collage

Cisca Zarmansyah : Before today, there never was a person doing this to me. You create a simple matter to look special. This is a special thing for me.

Cisca Zarmansyah : Thank you. I love it. I love you, my friend.

CieL- FreYa Ceastle : Hmm, he's so nice...

"I am me.
In all the world,
there is no one else exactly like me.
Everything that comes out of me
is authentically mine,
because I alone chose it --
I own everything about me:
my body,
my feelings,
my mouth,
my voice,
all my actions,
whether they be to others or myself.
I own my fantasies,
my dreams,
my hopes,
my fears.
I own my triumphs and successes,
all my failures and mistakes.
Because I own all of me,
I can become intimately acquainted with me.
By so doing,
I can love me
and be friendly with all my parts.
I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me,
and other aspects that I do not know
-- but as long as I am friendly
and loving to myself,
I can courageously and hopefully
look for solutions
to the puzzles and ways
to find out more about me.
However I look and sound,
whatever I say and do,
and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time
is authentically me.
If later some parts of how I looked,
sounded,
thought,
and felt
turn out to be unfitting,
I can discard that which is unfitting,
keep the rest,
and invent something new
for that which I discarded.
I can see,
hear,
feel,
think,
say, and do.
I have the tools to survive,
to be close to others,
to be productive,
and to make sense
and order out of the world of people
and things outside of me.
I own me,
and therefore,
I can engineer me.
I am me,
and I am okay."
