After two years struggle against cancer, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez finally died on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. The world lost one of the most inspirational figures in the history of modern socialism and nationalism. Venezuelan people mourn the departure of 58 year old leader. Chavez's departure also left a very deep sense of loss among the anti-global injustice's fighters.
Chavez is the leader who has become an icon of resistance, not only among Latin American countries but also on the global level. Among the leaders of the West -- particularly in the United States -- Chavez is clearly not the preferred figure. Anti democratic monster, anti freedom of the press, human rights violator, and authoritarian leader are some of the labels often given to him, he who is among Latin America popularly known as 'El Comandante'.
However, the more he is hated by the West and America, 'El Comandante' is even more loved by the people. That's not surprising, given during his reign, Chavez actually running pro-people policies. Not just rhetoric or even pro-Western. Once he ruled, for example, Chavez managed to reduce poverty by 50% and extreme poverty up to 70%. Chavez truly run the agrarian reform by distributing land to the people.
Venezuela is one of the countries with the largest oil reserves in the world. Instead of giving concessions to foreign oil companies, he even held the nationalization. Expropriation of foreign oil companies was carried out without hesitation. The results were distributed in the form of subsidies to improve the well-being of 30 million citizens of Venezuela.
Under Chavez , millions of Venezuelans who previously poor and sick --- gained their access to health care for free. Free education was implemented from elementary school through the college.
Indeed, Chavez is not a perfect figure. His policies related to subsidy remains cause strife among the bearers and defenders. The results of Chavez leadership until now is considered not making Venezuela to be a developed and prosperous country in the world. The critics in the West have a reason to call him as the bearer of a new socialism without success.
Regardless of the pros and cons, Chavez's character as a leader who dared to stand up and fight against American hegemony and domination with their neoliberal agenda is recognized by anyone. It is an important lesson for us. We, of course, do not want to copy and paste Chavez socialism style. Maybe we are not one idea with Chavez to nationalize foreign oil companies. We even criticize Chavez's policies in censoring the press and to silence the opposition groups. However, we respectfully with Chavez's action in defending the interests of state and his people.
Goodbye, 'El Comandante'. We will miss the presence of leaders with the spirit of patriotism as you have, here, wherever.
