In an effort to save money and increase productivity, Portugal is getting rid of some holidays that people don't really celebrate anymore. Among the obsolete days of non-work, the day the nation dumped the monarchy and became a republic, October 5th, 1910.
Astrid Adrienne : With the economic recovery of Europe in 1960, Portugal's economy has stagnated, so that Portugal experienced a downturn in the economy compared with other countries in Europe. Liberal economic reforms backed by elements of the ruling party, which successfully applied under similar circumstances in neighboring countries, Spain, was rejected by a fear if industrialization would destabilize the regime and its ideological basis will strengthen the left wing's movement and communist organizations.
In 1962, finally, academic crisis occurred. Regime concerned with growing and the popularity of democratic ideas among the students, so carry out the closure and a boycott of several student organizations and associations, including the most important being the National Secretariat of Portuguese Students. The students, with strong support from the Communist Party, answered with a demonstration of the peak on March 24, 1962. Brutally, a massive student demonstration in Lisbon was suppressed by anti-riot police, which resulted in hundreds of students were injured. After that, students started an attack that marked a turning point in the fight against the Estado Novo regime.
But then Portugal economy has changed dramatically in 1973 compared with its position in 1961.
What is clear is that the pre-revolutionary period was characterized by a complete annual growth rate (to GDP), industrial production, personal consumption, and gross profit of 7.8% of fixed capital. Portugal GDP per capita reached 56.4 % in 1974. In 1991 - 16 years later - GDP reached 54.9 %. And the more important thing is the revolution has pushed the democracy and Portugal economic revival, in connection with its participation in the European Economic Community (EEC) since 1985.

AN optical fiber vibrant sensor developed by Fudan University could be used to safeguard the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, said professor Jia Bo, director of the university's Optical Fiber Research Center. The Expo area is on both banks of the Huangpu River, and officials have to extend anti-terrorism measures to the river, where traditional security devices such as infrared monitors or electric fences are useless. Jia said that the Expo organizers had shown great interest in their invention as optical fiber sensors are very suitable to disturbances in deep water. Because optical fibers sensors are made of glass or plastic that carries light along their length, they need no electrical power and can't become rusty in the water, unlike metals. Fudan's sensor is sensitive enough to detect vibrations in the water or air. A machine linked to the fibers, weighing less than 4 kilograms, analyzes the transmission of light in the fiber to picture the source of the vibration, which may be caused by a person, a bird or a gust of wind. "We plan to fix optical fibers along both banks of the Huangpu River," said Tang Huang, a member of the research center. "If anyone tries to swim close to the bank or climb onto the flood walls, an alarm is sent immediately to the guards," he said. The equipment was used successfully in the National Aquatics Center during the Olympic Games. The sensors accurately monitored the underwater speakers to ensure synchronized swimmers could hear the right music. The woman who stood on the balcony was singing, "Do not cry for me Argentina" ... To whom was she speaking? To the people? To the homeland? A compelling scene.
But if we watch Evita -- the film directed by Allen Parker and based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical -- we will not know how to answer these questions seriously. Piece of music from the 1976 memoir tells the story of Eva Duarte, a former actress on a small scale. She died of cancer at the age of 33 years. She was a popular figure remarkable when accompanying her husband, Juan Peron, the Republican leader.
Under the balcony, the crowd gathered. They looked up, faces in grief, between the palace light and darkness in the middle of the road . Evita Peron was saying goodbye, perhaps to them, or rather through them, "Do not cry, Argentina ..."
But in this movie, the crowd never explained themselves to whom they actually were loyal, to what, and why. In the concept of Evita, presumably they were what was called as the people. They moved, sometimes in respectfully, procession, sometimes in a rage, anger sometimes in rows. But what drives all that, I never catch the images and words on the screen.
In this film there was a man named Che. He was present everywhere like the sound (chorus) in a Greek tragedy: to comment, include a moral message, connect the groove, or became a part of the story. Che appeared not as a representative and spokesman for the lively crowd, I guess. He was just an instrument of the composer to summarize the story's element to be coherent and "contains", a biography of Eva Peron. He was played by Antonio Banderas with a mouth pouting or anger, like the role of "intellectuals" and "activist" - but, frankly, I never catch what he rejected or what he wanted anyway.
Maybe I can't catch it all because after all it is a "musical" - a form of performance that --- presumably --- it's not very suitable for telling me about a biography, let alone a political history. Musical may still be attractive when it contains an Irving Berlin or Stephen Sondheim's short singing, accompanied with a hilarious dance and live, on fresh stage. But since the success of Oklahama! from Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1943, the musical has become a work with serious ambitions to integrate music, song and dance in a single story line and detailed. It may be a further embourgeoisement result of the opera: make it more to the middle class, an art form that--- in the 16th century -- enjoyed only by a layer of aristocratic who had time and a special tradition to listen to it. It is popular, glitzy, behavior, especially on Broadway.
There, the actors expressed their feelings by singing, and every word sung by melody - something that might not always an odd thing, even, in fact it was beautiful, like an Indian film that is preferred by people. (I also like Indian Films, such as this....)
But when the story began to have the claims of realism, when prose (not poetry) that played a role, we would have to be ready to see something a little strange: for example, angry scenes or negotiations took place as a chant. In Evita, we see an ambitious girl insisted on going to Buenos Aires, and her boyfriend tried to stop her. What we see in the scene: is it a quarrel or a singing contest? The sentences seem to reach a certain melodic effect, and conversely, the melody is not free to fly because its wings weighed down by the words. It could be a good technique on the scene like when Madonna appeared on the balcony: we see it as a kind of aria, with emotions which can indeed be appropriate for a song. But, should each dialog be brought into the song composition?
Maybe that's why I could not quite catch what was to be the subject matter of the conflicts in Evita. If this musical had no pretensions to tell about a passage in the modern history of Argentina, it would be easy.
But Llyoid Andrew Webber is the composer of a big spectacle. So, what we are seeing is what is prevalent in his work : what is important is, it is beautiful. What is exciting is the screen and spectacular performances. Political conflicts just to make the audience engrossed, the crowd of people just to create a compelling image composition.
In history, we are told that Juan Peron in his first reign ---1946-1955 --- selected by an impressive majority. He was supported by virtually all levels: landowners, churches, industrialists and laborers. He built a dictatorship and the spirit of "Peronismo", proclaimed the revolutionary nationalism, mobilized all funds and resources for self-reliance. That lasted until the 1950's, when Argentina's economic was deteriorating and Eva, his wife -- who was so popular -- died and Peron's position finally fell.
What is interesting is that "Peronismo" still resonates and can bring Juan Peron to lead back in 1971. There must be a deep reason. Why? And it's deeper than a somersault between Juan and Eva among the antiques. But Andrew Lloyd Webber and the Holywood - with financial considerations, of course - had to be simplistic and effective. For us, it is not surprising. In treating people as ornaments, without motive and without the attitude - a floating mass which can only be engineered and orchestrated - Webber and the producers are not alone, also in view politics as "pornography" and put a gloss of history. In America today, well that's what is going on, complete with ambition, glamor, money jingling, shrewdness and its absurdity.

Astrid Adrienne Since 2000, Russia experienced economic stretching --- as if --- it's unstoppable. This is Russia under Vladmir Putin, who on Monday (7 Mai 2012) would again become the President of Russia.
The news agency Agence France Presse (AFP) wrote, Russia experienced a phenomenon that has never happened before, the rapid growth of the middle class. In Russia, for example, the Citibank business also increased rapidly, thanks to its economic growth. One factor that drives all of this is the nationalization's result of the country's oil and gas wealth.
The energy needs and rising oil prices helped the smooth development of the country. Under the leadership of the late President Boris Yelstin, many of the country's wealth was gone because privatized as recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the West.
Putin can reverse all of that, including the jailing of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a Russian oligarchs who now is in jail.Under Putin, Russia has also triumphed on the international stage, including the country's merger in the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa). It is rare to be the focus of the Western press which --- relatively --- always assume bad on Putin's leadership. Human rights issues, electoral fraud, opposition demands have always dominated the news about Putin.

Adriaan Zef : I think it's a little redundant accusation, dude. He ought to first look in the mirror because he himself is building a dynasty in the country's political body. But, of course, political ethics say the opposite, if democracy also requires the circulation of power, not a well-established and irreplaceable ruler. Putin has been building "his castle". I see there are new faces of the Desembrists revolution against him. Adriaan Zef : Honey, Please, do not frown because of my comment. I just said what I thought.
