There's a consensus since the victory of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela (1998), with few exceptions (such as Mexico and Colombia), occurs what is called "shift to the left" in nearly all Latin American countries. But, there are extensive references related to whether the "shift to the left" tends to one kind, or there are two different paths (democratic left and right populistis), or even more. To be sure, all this shows how different the Latin America compared with the reference to "black and white" Europe in the 1970s, that only two trends in progressive (socialist) and reactionary (social democratic).

It was an ironic small insertion at the beginning of the 21st century, in the middle of a great story and inequality of North-South relations.
