"Stalin's trial against me is built upon false confessions, extorted by modern Inquisitorial methods, in the interests of the ruling clique. There are no crimes in history more terrible in intention or execution than the Moscow trials of Zinoviev-Kamenev and of Radek-Piatakov. These trials develop not from communism, not from socialism, but from Stalinism, that is, from the irresponsible despotism of the bureaucracy over the people!

"What is now my principal task? To reveal the truth. To show and to demonstrate that the true criminals hide under the cloak of the accusers. What will be the next step in this direction? The creation of an American, a European and subsequently, an international commission of inquiry, composed of people who incontestably enjoy authority and public confidence. I will undertake to present to such a commission all my files, thousands of personal and open letters in which the development of my thought and my action is reflected day by day, without any gaps. I have nothing to hide! Dozens of witnesses who are abroad possess invaluable facts and documents which will shed light on the Moscow frame-ups. The work of the commission of inquiry must terminate in a great countertrial. ► One reported dead as tornadoes hit US states. A powerful storm system churning through the US Midwest spawns tornadoes in the states of Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa, destroying homes and killing at least one person, US media reports.

► Coney Island strongmen pull off daring feats of force. Coney Island holds its annual retro Strongman Spectacular with a dozen men executing feats like bending metal with bare hands, and towing cars with teeth.

► Southern Russian city hit by twin car bombs. At least three people were killed and nearly 50 injured on Monday in twin car blasts outside a court building in a southern Russian city in the restive region of Dagestan. 

► British astronaut 'Major Tim' to fly to ISS. A former army helicopter pilot was on Monday named as the first "home-grown" British astronaut to head to the International Space Station.

► India, China vow to end long-running border dispute. The Indian and Chinese premiers pledge to finally resolve a border dispute that has soured ties for decades, saying good relations between the two Asian giants were key to world peace. 

► Palestinian father seeks inquiry after Israeli report. Israel said a France 2 television report seen worldwide on the death of a Palestinian boy in 2000 was "baseless", following an analysis of the raw footage. Jamal al-Dura, the father of the child, accused Israel on Monday of trying to cover up the truth and called for an international commission of inquiry. 

► Makeshift shrine for gay man murdered in Manhattan. A makeshift shrine was set in New York's Greenwich Village Monday at the location where Mark Carson, a 32-year-old gay man, was shot dead last week. New Yorkers -- including mayoral candidate Christine Quinn -- are planning a rally to protest the shooting, which has been labelled as a hate crime.

► Obama praises Myanmar reform but warns on Muslims. US President Barack Obama on Monday saluted Myanmar President Thein Sein for his leadership in pushing through startling political reforms, but warned ethnic violence against Muslims must stop. Obama looks very handsome when he's very objective.  Mwah! ||  ► Demonstrators protest Myanmar president's White House visit. Demonstrators protested outside the White House on Monday in advance of Myanmar President Thein Sein's meeting with Barack Obama. They accuse the leader of Myanmar of ethnic cleasing against the Rohingya, a mostly muslim minority

► Titian gallery on wheels to tour the UK. The National Gallery's "Titian Experience" opened on Monday in London. The mobile cinema truck will tour art festivals in the UK this summer and allow visitors to sit under a canopy and watch a short film which approaches Titian's "Diana and Callisto" from a 21st-century perspective.

► Australian zoo says white rhino birth 'sign of hope'. An Australian zoo says the birth of a southern white rhinoceros is a "sign of hope" for the species given the escalation of poaching in Africa.

► Voters Could Elect LA's First Female Mayor. Los Angeles voters go to the polls on Tuesday, and they could make history by electing the city's first female mayor. The runoff election pits City Controller Wendy Greuel against City Councilman Eric Garcetti. (May 21)
