► Pakistani protesters celebrate news of an arrest warrant for the prime minister. Thousands in Islamabad are demanding the government's resignation at a demonstration led by a popular cleric. The country's Supreme Court on Tuesday gave authorities 24 hours to arrest Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and 16 others in connection with a corruption case. The latest ruling follows a court decision last year declaring government power contracts illegal. But an accountability bureau's lack of action on that decision led to Tuesday's ruling. The court order and the mass protest near parliament are the latest in a series of challenges for the administration spurring political uncertainty.

► New York enacts gun-control laws. Jan 16 - New York signs into law one of the nation's toughest gun-control measures and the first to be enacted since the mass school shooting in Connecticut. Sarah Charlton reports. PLEASE NOTE: THIS EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signs the first gun-control measures into law since last year's deadly shooting at a school in Connecticut. The bill brings into force tough new rules on assault weapons, ammunition capacity and screening for people who are mentally ill. SOUNDBITE: THOMAS ABINANTI, NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY MEMBER, SAYING (English): "Let's stop glorifying violence, guns and those who use them. All I hear today is 'We need to have these weapons to defend ourselves.' Well, we are not going to be invaded by an army." The legislation was proposed in the wake of the Newtown shooting last month which left 20 students and six adults dead. It also came on the day of another deadly shooting - as two people were killed when gunfire broke out in the carpark of a Kentucky college. Gun rights groups, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), lashed out at the New York bill, saying it was rushed too quickly through the statehouse. As the measures passed, protesters gathered in Connecticut calling for an end to the sale of assault weapons. On Wednesday (January 16), President Barack Obama is expected to unveil recommendations to curb gun violence.

► West African leaders discuss Mali troop deployment - Jan. 15 :: Regional military chiefs meet in Bamako to speed up deployment of 3,300 regional troops in Mali. Travis Brecher reports. West African military chiefs met in Bamako on Tuesday to discuss plans to speed up the deployment of 3,300 regional troops in an effort to push Islamist rebels out of northern Mali. Leaders from the Economic Community of West African States gathered to decide on a deployment schedule, with some West African troops set to be on the ground in a week's time. Senegal, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria and Guinea have all offered troops. The original timetable for the UN-sanctioned African force did not initially foresee full deployment before September due to logistical constraints. But the plan has been fast-tracked after a plea for help by Mali's government after mobile columns of Islamist fighters began threatening key settlements. France has already poured hundreds of troops into Mali and has kept up air strikes on Islamist militant targets. Their mission has been aided by deliveries of military equipment by British RAF C-17 cargo planes. || PHOTOS

► Lyon's light festival. Published on Dec 7, 2012 by telegraphtv :: Lyon, in southeastern France, beamed brightly as its neighbourhoods and buildings were illuminated, part of the city's annual 'Light Festival'. A giant exploding 'Magic Cube' kicked off the four-day festival as thousands of visitors poured into the city's Place Bellecour to watch the displays. Organisers say there are 66 different displays stretching across the city as far out as Lyon airport. Across from Place Bellecour and over the Saone river into Lyon's old quarter, Vieux Lyon, the Cathedrale de St Jean shone with wacky light and sound animations. The most amusing display featured two impish characters causing havoc over the facade for Vieux Lyon's station, Gare de Saint Paul. Authorities have closed off Lyon's central Presqu'ile district from all traffic for the duration of the Festival to allow visitors to move around on foot and explore the different light displays around the town.
