► France bombs Islamist stronghold in north Mali - Jan. 13 - France has rushed to help Mali block a push south by Islamist rebels from its desert north. The French Air Force adds muscle to its mission in Mali. French fighter jets are pounding an Islamist rebel stronghold deep in northern Mali. France is determined to end Islamist domination of north, which many fear could serve a base for attacks on the West In Bamako people are doing what they can to help out. They are donating their blood. Officials say they have already collected more than 1,000 pouches of blood. On the streets some say they are grateful to France. (SOUNDBITE) (Bambara) IBRAHIM SIDIBE, COFFE SHOP CLIENT, SAYING: "We have an army, but they don't have the force to fight the Islamists. I don't know what we would have done if the French didn't come." Senior military officials from Mali visit troops who are fighting rebels alongside French forces. For more than two decades peaceful elections earned Mali a reputation as a bulwark of democracy on the Continent. That image unraveled in a matter of weeks after a military coup in March -- which left a power vacuum for the Islamist rebellion and an uncertain future for the country. Deborah Lutterbeck reports || ► French fighter-bombers head out for mission over Mali - Jan. 13 - French military releases video of Rafale fighter bombers leaving for mission over Mali. Rough Cut (no reporter narration). ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: The French military on Sunday released video of what it said was Rafale fighter bombers leaving a base in eastern France and then landing in the Chadian capital of N'Djamena after having carried out a mission over Mali. The video showed night time shots of munitions being fixed under the wings of four fighter-bombers at a base in St Dizier in eastern France overnight. The squadron then landed after completion of its mission over Mali in the Chadian capital of N'Djamena. The munitions were no longer visible under the wings. Earlier on Sunday, Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the French Air Force was carrying out round-the-clock strikes against rebels who took over the north of Mali nine months ago and whose move south prompted Bamako to seek military support from France, the former colonial power.

► Introducing the Shoebill Storks! Uploaded on Oct 9, 2009 by Houstonzoo :: Only a few zoos in the world have shoebills, so the Houston Zoo's addition of this young pair of big African birds is a significant achievement for our bird department. Named after their prominent shoe-shaped bills, shoebills are a vulnerable bird species whose feathers turn completely gray as they mature. Their large heads, eyes, and bills help them find food in muddy swamps. Shoebills can grow as tall as five feet, boast a nearly eight-foot wingspan, and weigh up to fifteen pounds. Despite their large size, relatively little is known about their habits in the wild. While some taxonomists consider them to be in the stork family, many others believe the birds are more closely related to pelicans.
► Galya Morrell: An Arctic life from Red Army to ice artist. 14 January 2013 - Galya Morrell has spent most of her life in the Arctic. The child of Siberian Komi nomads, she became a Soviet army officer and worked as a journalist for Pravda. Today she is a polar explorer and an ice artist and has devoted her life to the wellbeing of the "northern nation" of Arctic denizens. Morrell, 51, still undertakes hard-core expeditions and spends only about one month a year in the New York City apartment she shares with her American husband. Last June, she navigated the Greenlandic seas with three fellow explorers in a small open boat the size of a sofa. In hard weather conditions when it was impossible to dock, the group would spend days on end at sea. "The secret is to accept and try to adapt," she says.
