Toujours, tu te tiens solitaire par delà les ondes de mes chants.
Les vagues de mes harmonies baignent tes pieds,
mais je ne sais comment les atteindre.
Et ce que je joue pour toi est une musique trop lointaine.
C'est la douleur de la séparation qui s'est faite mélodie : elle chante par ma flûte.
Et j'attends l'heure où ta barque traversera l'eau jusqu'à mon rivage,
et où tu prendras ma flûte dans tes mains.
Écoute, mon coeur ; dans cette flûte chante la musique du parfum des fleurs sauvages, des feuilles étincelantes et de l'eau qui brille; La musique d'ombres sonores, d'un bruit d'ailes et d'abeilles. La flûte a ravi son sourire des lèvres de mon ami et le répand sur sa vie.
Cet amour entre nous n'est point un simple badinage, mon aimé. Encore et encore les nuits rugissantes des tempêtes se sont abattues sur moi, éteignant ma lumière ; des doutes noirs se sont amassés, effaçant toutes les étoiles de mon ciel. Encore et encore les digues ont été rompues, laissant les flots balayer mes moissons, et les plaintes et le désespoir ont déchiré mon ciel de part en part.
