Jan Pepijn Servaas : I agree on your opinion, some, that Obama and Romney are just the same. After the shooting in Colorado, they are both just silent. They didn't mention at all about the strict supervision for gun ownership in the U.S. How do you think, is this matter going to poison their presidential campaigns?

Astrid Adrienne : Jan, you can ask Zef for further info, he knows more of its details. But as far as I know, the right to have the guns in the U.S. is protected, even in Colorado, the law is not too tight. After the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999, background checks on buyers are enforced, but there are no restrictions at all to purchase a rifle or pistol that has a high-caliber ammunition, even for the arms purchases online, registration and licensing of gun ownership the fire are not required. So also with background checks for gun sales online, it's not required.

Jan Pepijn Servaas : Why is the law that restrict the guns in America not so strict? What will happen if every person has a weapon and each person also has the right to shoot each other? It is strange that the U.S. can not guarantee the security of its own citizens, but very concerned about the security of other citizens in other countries.

Astrid Adrienne : In the last decade, the issue of guns has been pushed out of the American political agenda, Jan. One reason is that the Democrats feel the issue was hurting them in the 2000 presidential elections, at the national level. Al Gore is a supporter of gun control, and he lost. Another reason is that Democrats want to attract the pro-gun conservative sympathizers. Bush was the U.S. president in the history of the most friendly with a weapon. This makes the pro-gun lobby group, especially the NRA is moving rapidly. In 2008, for the first time in the U.S. history, the Supreme Court affirmed the existence of private rights for U.S. citizens to have the weapons. It provided a true declaration of legitimacy that had been sought by the pro gun. Indeed, today there are a number of calls for the establishment of more stringent gun laws, but in the absence of a sustainable national advocacy, I think it will be less meaningful.

Pranay Suresh : Excuse me ma'am, why did Obama not try to change this situation? His political background is a supporter of gun control, right?

Astrid Adrienne : Yes, Nay. He's a supporter of gun control, but of course he will not push this issue when he becomes the president. I feel, he feels the need to channel his political capital in another realm. America is now in the midst of the presidential campaign. You may think this issue will be discussed by the other candidates, but no candidate wants to talk about gun control. Obama does not want to make the right wing feel upset. He wants to keep the focus on the issues have been handled.

On the other hand, Mitt Romney tries to portray himself as a moderate and centrist. Romney does not want to offend the NRA, given the NRA relating to the Republican party. The current political situation is not conducive to making changes on the weapons issue. No party at the national level wish to put forward this issue.

Pranay Suresh : Which is more stringent ma'am, regulations that control the banana trade between countries or regulations that control the circulation of weapons in the world?

Astrid Adrienne : There are many more rules for banana's trade than regulation to sell the AK-47 or helicopter gunships, Nay. Let's watch this video. Ban Ki-moon had criticized the failure to reach agreement.
