The issue of the war, like the issue of peace will indeed continue to exist as long as people are still standing. The most obvious is the origin of human belief on authority owned and mastery over everything.
Referring to the French thinker Claude Levi-Strauss (1908-2009), the man ultimately be responsible for the absolute humanist attitude. For several centuries, humanism led to war, destruction, concentration camps, extermination of various kinds of living creatures, and the impoverishment of nature.
In February 2014, Islamic extremists who previously called the Islamic State in Iraq and Syrian state or ISIS began to find its form. At the beginning of its birth, April 2013, ISIS was affiliated with Al-Qaeda. However, later, exactly on February 3, 2014, ISIS was no longer recognized as Al-Qaeda's network.
ISIS also operates independently and at odds with other jihadist groups. Under the command of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, ISIS grows stronger and able to extend its influence to Europe, America, and Asia. The militant group aspires to unite the countries in the middle east eastern, including Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel. ISIS has an independent funding source which mostly obtained illegally, such as looting during the occupation of Mosul in last June.
In July, this Sunni extremist group declared its caliphate under the name Islamic State (IS). Most of the territory of Iraq and Syria occupied. Execution of a series of foreign hostages shown. A coalition led by U.S. was formed to crush the group.
Syria monitoring organizations based in the U.K. said the victims of the IS reached 1878 people in Syria during the past six months. Most of the dead were civilians.
Meanwhile, in the Blue Continent, in early 2014, protests erupted in Ukraine. Residents demanded the government to seek membership in the European Union and reduced its dependence on Russia. The demonstration began when President Viktor Yanukovych canceled his intention to join the EU. Revolution was continued until Yanukovych to resign. Hundreds of lives were taken away, until in March 2014, Crimea, --- which was once the province in Ukraine -- chose to join Russia.
In the next month, in the Middle East, the civil war in Syria was still continuing. A total of 88 civilians were killed by barrel bomb in Aleppo in the conflict between the government and groups who wanted President Bashar al-Assad to step down. The president pressed to come down, although to this day, Al-Assad is still sitting in the presidential chair. Out there, the people oppressed by the two warring powers : Al-Assad's government and rebel groups. Syrian people struggling to save their lives.
The war has not extinguished until mid 2014. In July, Israel accused Hamas of being behind the killing of three Israeli teenagers who were kidnapped in the West Bank. Israel then hit Gaza for nearly two months. More than 2,100 Palestinians were killed. The United Nations estimated 70% of the dead were civilians, including women and children. Although a ceasefire was agreed between Israel and Hamas officials on August 26, 2014, but the suffering of civilians was continuing. Most public facilities and infrastructure in Gaza had been flattened.
Meanwhile, In the Dark Continent, Ebola outbreak marked as the worst in the history of plague spread in the world. WHO noted, there were 19 497 cases of Ebola in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. Almost half lead to death. Until December 17, 2014, an outbreak of Ebola has killed 7588 people.
The most fresh tragedy in memory was Taliban attack on a school in Peshawar, Pakistan, on December 16, 2014. The attack killed a total of 149 people, mostly students aged 12-16 years. Pakistan not only grieving, the world was in mourning.
The war has shown itself as the most effective killer in human life. Human tragedy continues, though the two world wars have occurred. The state's role ought to be questioned. Why is it unable to protect its people? What is the point of having a leader who is not able to provide security to the people?
Because, actually civilians just want to live peacefully. Talal Ahmad, a refugee who fled from invasion of Islamic State in Iraq, voicing it, "Whoever will rule us, let them rule us. We just want our children to be safe," he said.
War is always complicated. Too simple to say that the war is only focused on winning or losing. Beyond this, there is a morality that must be completed. Citing Julien Benda (1867-1956) a French philosopher and novelist, one fatal flaw in the human mind is to teach men that war contains a morality of its own and should be set, though there is no point at all. Peace, if it ever exists, will not be based on the fear of war but on the love of peace.
