ONLINE TODAY
► 16 June 2015 : There are so many things you want to start today that you can't keep up with your own agenda. The noisy Gemini New Moon joins forces with impetuous Mars in your 3rd House of Information, filling your mind with data that can actually prevent you from seeking the deeper meaning of your experiences. You may be preoccupied with all the external commotion now, while wishing you had a chance to seek the pleasures you believe are waiting for you somewhere nearby. Keep your dreams alive by talking about them when you can. Don't lose hope; your time will come sooner than you think.
► 17 June 2015 : Remaining quiet might seem like a sensible strategy today, but you can't avoid conflict by simply relying on defensive maneuvers. Even if you try to keep your feelings to yourself, unexpressed emotions have an uncanny way of leaking into interactions and hijacking your day. It isn't fun to lose your temper, so get your concerns out into the open now instead of naively assuming that things will improve on their own. Transparency is your friend.
► 18 June 2015 : Your attraction to someone special makes it difficult to express your desires because you're afraid of being rejected. You could grow overly concerned that your needs aren't supported by the current dynamics, leading you to bury your worries. However, pretending that everything is copacetic won't work in your favor since it will be quite apparent that you are holding something back. Ultimately, it's not what you choose to share that's problematic now; it's how you deliver the message that counts.
► 19 June 2015 : You wake up with a fresh outlook on life. It seems as if the dark clouds are lifting and you can see further off into the distance. It feels as if you should be setting long-term goals, but the childlike Leo Moon adds an element of playfulness to nearly everything you do. You're eager to face even the most challenging situations; just narrow your field of vision and proceed methodically as you turn your dreams into reality.
► 20 June 2015 : Unsettled career questions make it tough to relax today, but at least the rush of adrenaline lets you know you are alive. Relationship dramas may weigh on your heart now, but openly expressing your intentions brings temporary relief. Unfortunately, the underlying issues won't be resolved so easily. Don't bother trying to tie up every feeling into a tidy package. Just maintain a positive attitude as you continue to reinvent your future. Remember, lasting change doesn't happen overnight.
► 21 June 2015 : It's not fun when someone rejects your plans, but you might as well reserve your complaining for some other day. You won't likely receive a lot of support if an idea of yours can't stand up to fair criticism. Thankfully, the circumstances are not as dire as you think. Your contributions can have significant impact if you are willing to hear the tough truth now, learn an important lesson and step up your game as needed. The most successful people know there's always room for improvement.
► 22 June 2015 : Trivial facts can be annoying today, especially if they get in the way of your ambitious goals. However, you're in a hurry to produce results and could judge others harshly if they can't keep up with your accelerated pace. Naturally, practicing patience might alleviate tension before it even arises, but you just don't have the time to wait. You'll take the faster speed, along with the complications. Thankfully, the cosmos will reward your independent thinking now as long as you have a solid plan in place. Being a leader doesn't always mean the pack will follow.
► 23 June 2015 : Conflicting cosmic instructions make it nearly impossible to please others today. One voice tells you to go while another commands you to stop. Macho Mars runs into Saturn's obstacles and there doesn't seem to be a way to get past the resistance. If you push too hard, you may wish you didn't. But if you don't try at all, you will wish you did. The only logical strategy now is to steer clear of extremes as you actively work the accelerator and the brake to stay within the speed limit.
► 24 June 2015 : Your intensity is on the rise, yet you may feel moody and withdrawn today, filling you with contradictions. Unfortunately, you're bothered by the same things that wouldn't necessarily concern you on some other day. Additionally, you might grow annoyed with your own denial because you don't want to confront the source of the current irritation. Nevertheless, consciously facing an uncomfortable issue now is smarter than unconsciously losing your temper down the road.
► 25 June 2015 : It's tempting to take the demands of your job home with you today, but loved ones are quickly annoyed by your cranky mood if you do. Your attitude affects those around you more than you realize, so don't spread your negativity by bringing your problems home from work. You might feel as if you're on a collision course with reality now, yet you can avoid the crisis of impact by being more compassionate in your interactions. When in doubt, widen your perspective to include what others want, too. The needs of the many outweigh yours alone.
► 26 June 2015 : Your hasty reactions can create unnecessary problems today, especially if you don't respect people's existing boundaries. There are times when it's perfectly acceptable to push back against someone's resistance, but it must be done in a kind and thoughtful manner. Stop to consider if you may be stepping out of line now. Healthy relationships depend upon your ability to honor your partner's needs for personal space, especially when everyone's nerves are on edge. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
► 27 June 2015 : You can override your wariness of uncomfortable emotional interactions today as long as you trust the wisdom of the universe. You intuitively know that your fear of losing control currently stands between you and the intimacy you would like to create. But you can't use reason to push past your concerns now. Although you might not be able to shut off the endless flow of self-doubting words, listen to your heart instead of your head. Be courageous and take a leap of faith for love.
► 28 June 2015 : When you stand still long enough to explore beneath the surface, emotional issues take on a life of their own. You typically don't go out of your way to find these places where you feel vulnerable because you prefer dealing with problems you can solve quickly. Nevertheless, there isn't anything that must be fixed now. Acknowledging your penchant to cut loose when things get too deep helps you stay present with your dilemma. As the Beatles sang, "Oh that magic feeling, nowhere to go."
► 29 June 2015 : You might not be all that concerned about your future emotional security because your personal relationships appear to be growing stronger. You may be so confident that you think you can have it all now. However, it's one thing to indulge in fantasies that carry you into new territory; it's quite a different thing to share your out-of-the-box desires with someone who could feel threatened by them. Thankfully, there's a lot of room to spread your wings without jeopardizing an arrangement that already works. A dash of consideration saves the day.
► 30 June 2015 : Magical plans are on your drawing table and the more you think about them, the bigger they become. You can't help but be excited about the prospects of an upcoming event, but you need to be careful, nonetheless. It's possible to invest so much energy into your ambitions that you can't live up to your own expectations, even if all goes according to your plans. Dream large but don't be disappointed if reality falls short of perfection. If you aim for the stars, there's no shame in only reaching the Moon.

Photo by @petekmuller/@prime_collective for @natgeo. People attend Sunday church service in #Freetown, #SierraLeone. This image was made in December, at the peak of the #Ebola crisis in the country. At the time, church and mosque services were among the few exceptions to a general ban on large public gatherings. Much of the sermon dealt with the crisis and prayers were said for those affected by the virus. During the heavy days of the outbreak, every aspect of life was affected. People did not touch one another, schools were suspended and fear was palpable. The outbreak will live in the collective memory of Sierra Leoneans for decades to come. Check out our story on the hunt for the reservoir host of the Ebola virus in the July issue of National Geographic Magazine. #Religion #church #africa |
Photo by Pete Muller. Residents of the village of Meliandou, Guinea unwind in the afternoon. Meliandou is a very small village (pop 400) located in Guinea's largely isolated forest region. It's approximately ten miles from the border town of Gueckedou, a major transit point and trading hub between Guinea, Liberia and SierraLeone. Meliandou is on the cusp of the development that has arrived in nearby Gueckedou in recent years. As you can see, several residents have mobile phones but the network is scarce at best. Phones in such places are more commonly used as cameras and music playing devices. I always find it interesting how quickly the signs of development dissipate outside of towns. Meliandou struggles to regain its footing after having been the origin point of the West Africa Ebola crisis. The outbreak started in Meliandou in December 2013 and left scores of residents dead. |
► EDUCATION : ATLANTIC JIHAD : The Untold Story of White Slavery. Whilst the Arabs have been acknowledged as a prime force in the early usage of slaves from Africa, very little has been written about their usage of White slaves, whether they were part of the Russian slave trade or those kidnapped by Arab pirates. However, in recent years, the research of some authors has been bringing this issue to light. The origins of African slavery in the New World cannot be understood without some knowledge of the millennium of warfare between Christians and Muslims that took place in the Mediterranean and Atlantic and the piracy and kidnapping that went along with it. In 1627 pirates from the Barbary Coast of North Africa raided distant Iceland and enslaved nearly four hundred astonished residents. In 1617 Muslim pirates, having long enslaved Christians along the coasts of Spain, France, Italy, and even Ireland, captured 1,200 men and women in Portuguese Madeira. Down to the 1640s, there were many more English slaves in Muslim North Africa than African slaves under English control in the Caribbean. Indeed, a 1624 parliamentary proclamation estimated that the Barbary states held at least 1,500 English slaves, mostly sailors captured in the Mediterranean or Atlantic. Millions European Christians were kidnapped and enslaved by Muslims in North Africa between 1530 and 1780 -- a far greater number than had ever been estimated before. Professor Robert Davis, in his book Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800, estimated that 1 million to 1.25 million White people were enslaved by North African pirates between 1530 and 1780.
One of the things that both the public and many scholars have tended to take as given is that slavery was always racial in nature -- that only blacks have been slaves. But that is not true, We cannot think of slavery as something that only white people did to black people. Slavery in North Africa has been ignored and minimized, in large part because it is on no one's agenda to discuss what happened. The enslavement of Europeans doesn't fit the general theme of European world conquest and colonialism that is central to scholarship on the early modern era, he said. Many of the countries that were victims of slavery, such as France and Spain, would later conquer and colonize the areas of North Africa where their citizens were once held as slaves. Maybe because of this history, Western scholars have thought of the Europeans primarily as "evil colonialists" and not as the victims they sometimes were. Between 1580 and 1680. That meant about 8,500 new slaves had to be captured each year. Overall, this suggests nearly a million slaves would have been taken captive during this period. Using the same methodology, Davis has estimated as many as 475,000 additional slaves were taken in the previous and following centuries.
The result is that between 1530 and 1780 there were almost certainly 1 million and quite possibly as many as 1.25 million white, European Christians enslaved by the Muslims of the Barbary Coast. Enslavement was a very real possibility for anyone who traveled in the Mediterranean, or who lived along the shores in places like Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, and even as far north as England and Iceland.from 1500 to 1650, when trans-Atlantic slaving was still in its infancy, more white Christian slaves were probably taken to Barbary than black African slaves to the Americas, Pirates (called corsairs) from cities along the Barbary Coast in north Africa -- cities such as Tunis and Algiers -- would raid ships in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, as well as seaside villages to capture men, women and children.
The impact of these attacks were devastating -- France, England, and Spain each lost thousands of ships, and long stretches of the Spanish and Italian coasts were almost completely abandoned by their inhabitants. At its peak, the destruction and depopulation of some areas probably exceeded what European slavers would later inflict on the African interior. We have lost the sense of how large enslavement could loom for those who lived around the Mediterranean and the threat they were under," he said. "Slaves were still slaves, whether they are black or white, and whether they suffered in America or North Africa. Published on Jun 3, 2013 by Krsto Zrnov Popović

The UN is dealing with more people displaced, forced to flee from their homes, than at any time since the Second World War - in total more than 50 million people. The single worst tragedy is the Syrian crisis with a death toll of over 200,000.According to the UN more than 12 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance after being forced to flee their homes due to the country's ongoing civil war. Almost four million refugees have fled mainly to neighbouring countries.Valerie Amos served as the UN's undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator for almost five years. She has been battling to get more aid into the country, but the UN has faced many challenges in delivering aid to the refugees. As she is ending her time as the UN's humanitarian chief, Amos sat down with Talk to Al Jazeera to discuss her frustration about the UN Security Council's division on Syria, conflicts and humanitarian crises around the world, and the need to reform the international system.
