■ Why is Russia so resolute on Syria? - Published: 03 February, 2012
Russia and China to meet their pledge to veto a UN Security Council-related violence in Syria. Following the veto, representatives of Western countries expressed their protest.
As reported by CNN, the veto imposed by the two countries on the UN Security Council session Saturday, February 5, 2012 which passed a draft of the resolution proposed by Morocco on Syria. Known in advance, Russia and China have repeatedly expressed their objection on foreign interference in the political problems in the country.
Russia has expressed its objections to the correction on the resolution which was completed at a hearing last Thursday. In the resolution, said that the Security Council fully supports the plan of the Arab League has called on President Bashar al-Assad to hand over to his deputy and hold the free election.
Both Russia and China said they were worried about the UN resolution would end as it did in Libya. "Text resolution does not accurately reflect the actual state and sends unbalanced signals to various parties in Syria," said Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin.
China's UN Ambassador Li Baodong said the resolution would only worsen the situation and gave unilateral decisions before the dialogue. However, China called on all parties to stop violence and restore the peace in Syria.
A total of 13 member states of the UN Security Council approved the resolution. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice admitted that she was fed up with the veto imposed by Russia and China. Previously, China and Russia also had veto on the UN Security Council resolution in October last year.
"Since the two countries dropped the veto on Syria last year, about 3,000 civilians were killed. They who are blocking a final attempt to resolve this peacefully will see a future full of blood," said Susan. "If any further bloodshed (in Syria), it will be their responsibility (Russia and China)," Rice said.
The same thing was conveyed by British Ambassador to the UN Mark Lyall Grant. He said China and Russia had to bear the burden of every person who died in Syria due to the failure of the resolution. "This means that Russia and China are more support the tyranny than the Syrians," said Grant.
Diplomats and leaders of Western countries expressed their anger reactions on Russia and China's decision.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said he deeply regretted the veto of the two countries, which he said has damaged the UN role in solving various problems in the world. UN data for these states, the wave of violence in Syria has killed no fewer than 5,400 people.
Over the past two days, the activists in Syria reported at least 230 people have been killed in the city of Homs because battered by the pro-Assad's force artillery.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the veto by Russia and China would encourage further violence by the Assad regime to crush the popular movement. "The tragedy of Syria must be stopped," said Sarkozy.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Russia and China have disappointed the people of Syria and chose in favor of the Assad regime which have brutally oppressed its people in order to maintain the interests of their respective countries.
Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi consider the double veto was "a very bad news".
President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz urged Moscow and Beijing to "run their international responsibilities seriously".
Human rights organization Amnesty International called the veto a "very surprising heartless betrayal" to the Syrians.
Dynamic development of the Syrian issue lately further indicates that Russia and China to be the key solution. Actually there is the factor of Iran, but the level is still below Russia and China in an international context, particularly in the Security Council of the United Nations.
Whatever the form of a peace proposal concerning Syria will fall apart at the UN Security Council if Russia or China to use their veto power. The key role of Russia and China is recognized by the Arab League which tried to play a major role in this issue. In other words, Arab League absolutely need Russia and China as partners in the effort to find a solution in Syria.
Arab League Secretary General Nabil el Arabi in Cairo on Sunday (29/1), stated the Arab League tried to change the attitude of Russia and China in the UN Security Council session in New York, this Tuesday (February 6). Al Arabi claimed to have made contact with Russia and China for consultations about Syria.
The Arab League new initiative asked Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to divert his authority to the vice president, and then forming a national unity government, followed by the implementation of free and transparent election under the international supervision. The initiative received a positive response from the European Union. In fact, the EU was willing to adopt the Arab League's new initiative under the umbrella of the Arab-European initiative.
Arab League tried a new initiative after realizing that its monitoring team which working in Syria since December 26, 2011 was less effective, even it was criticized by many parties, particularly by the Western and Syrian opposition itself. Monitoring team is now frozen.
For the Arab League, the new initiative is the last card in an attempt to find a solution in Syria after a variety of ways just a fiasco. Therefore, the Arab League and Russia talks in New York will largely determine the future of Syria.
Political analyst of the Al Hayat daily, George Samaan said Russia was not really defend the interests of President Assad, but finding a replacement that ensures the interests of Russia in Syria and the Middle East.
As is known, Syria and Russia have a very long historical ties since the Cold War era until now. In Russia's eyes, Syria is the basis of its influence in the Middle East. For Russia, to lose Syria is to lose the Middle East. It is a gesture that hinted at by Russia of the importance of Syria's position as Russia sent the warships to Tartus city last month.
Russia appeared less comfortable with the national board of the Syrian opposition and based in Istanbul, Turkey. Perhaps the Russians saw the Syrian national council couldn't guarantee its interests in the Middle East.
Moreover, based on election results in Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco which was won by the Islamist stronghold makes Russia think a thousand times for Assad. Alternative to the Assad regime in Syria is now only two: the Muslim Brotherhood or the national council of transition plus the smaller opposition factions.
If the free and transparent election is held in Syria, the Muslim Brotherhood will almost certainly win, as happened in Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco. In the Arab world, Syria's Muslim Brotherhood is known as the strongest after Egypt. They are not necessarily willing to accommodate Russian interests which doesn't have a close ties to the Islamist camp. Russia is known to have been related more closely to the regime of Syrian nationalists, such as the Assad family.
This is the mission of the Arab League and the West: how to lure Russia with the new government could guarantee Russia's interests.

Iran expresses its support for Syria because Iran believes the majority of citizens still support the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad. Although many Arab and Western countries critical of Syria, Iran will not stop supporting Syria.
Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Roknabadi stated unequivocally its support for Syria, though there are many countries in this world try to discredit Iran.
At the same time, the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood threw its criticism of President Assad. The muslim Brotherhood even looked at the Syrian regime is the same as Nazi Germany.
According to a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, Zouheir Salem, there are three countries that supply the weapons to President Assad regime. They are Russia, China, and Iran. The Muslim Brotherhood seemed to blame China and Russia who used their veto power to thwart the resolution against Syria.
In addition to the Muslim Brotherhood, the Syrian opposition parties also seem to hate Iran, they even intend to sever its links with Iran, Hezbollah and even Hamas.
Roknabadi dismissed the allegations stating that Iran is providing weapons and support the delivery of military personnel to the regime of President Assad that is used to secure the demonstrators.
From the first, Iran has always considered that the issue of Syria must be free of foreign intervention. Persia also reminded the international community that the reform is essential to do in Syria, not the regime change.

■ Abbas to head Palestinian unity government
Mahmoud Abbas's option to conciliate with Hamas indicated the boredom from Fatah faction leaders in negotiating with Israel.
For the first time since 2007, the factions Fatah and Hamas formed a Palestinian unity government. In an agreement called the Doha Declaration, Mahmoud Abbas would lead the unity government to prepare elections in the Palestinian territories in the coming months.
"We are serious, both Fatah and Hamas in healing wounds, end the division and strengthen the reconciliation," said Khaled Meshal, the Hamas leader in speech broadcasted by Al Jazeera.
Agreement mediated by Qatar on Monday (6 Feb) was practically put an end to factional rivalry that led to the formation of a separate government in the West Bank and in Gaza in 2007.
Two of Abbas aides, Nabil Shaath and Azzam al-Ahmed said they were optimistic of a new Palestinian government would receive international recognition. The first reason, "Doha Declaration" specifies that government must be filled by the ranks of independent political expert. Second, the national unity government will run in accordance with the principles of the Middle East Peace Quartet (U.S., UN, EU and Middle East) which outlines the importance of the Palestinian government to abandon violence and to support the peace.
In response to the meeting point between Fatah and Hamas, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department Victoria Nuland said the U.S. was still seeking information regarding the details of the agreement of both factions. "The important thing for us is the principles that guide the Palestinian government, so they can play a constructive role in peace and the establishment of an independent state," she said. "The Palestinian government," she said, "It should also recognize the state of Israel and accept agreements which has been made before. "
On the other hand, the European Union expressed support for the Fatah-Hamas reconciliation. European Union (which - so far - the financial backer of the Palestinian Authority) is committed to continue supporting the Palestinian government.
Criticism leveled by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "Hamas is a terrorist organization that wants to destroy Israel and gets support from Iran." he said in a meeting with Likud party. "If Abbas realizes what he signed in Doha, it shows the path he chooses to ignore the peace and joins Hamas. "
Abbas options to reconcile with Hamas, according to some observers, showed the boredom of Fatah leader in negotiating with Israel. So far, Abbas took three paths toward establishing a Palestinian state. First, negotiate with Israel through the mediation of the Jordan. It had been shown, it failed because of Israel constantly violated the agreement by establishing Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories. Second, to achieve the international recognition of Palestinian sovereignty in international forums, such as the UN's security council and UNESCO. But the action was thwarted by the United States by cutting funding for UNESCO and lobbying for a number of countries in the UNSC.
His last option was to embrace Hamas which began leaning to the corridors of diplomacy after its affiliate -- the Muslim Brotherhood -- won a convincing victory in elections in Egypt and Tunisia.
Reconciliation agreement between Hamas and Fatah is the capital importance to the achievement of Palestinian independence. It can increase the bargaining power of Palestinian diplomacy, because Israel and Western countries are no longer regard the country with one eye. Moreover, diplomatic struggle of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to be a member of the UN agencies, although it failed, has added morale boost for the Palestinians.
But the achievement will not mean much if the two organizations - with different direction - still put the ideological rigidity and their respective interests in their struggle. Moreover, Hamas and Fatah must put the courage and decisiveness in commitment. It depends on the development of both political maturity. The first key is to unite. If not, those who will applaud is the political opponents (the U.S. and Israel).
Commitment of the two organizations will be tested mainly by Israel who does not want to see the Palestinian unity. For example, arrested a member of the Palestinian parliament factions Hamas, Azia Dweik, last month. Comprehensive reconciliation can add the strength and recognized by the United Nations.
Israeli political analyst Yossi Alpher assess Abbas is well aware that there is a separation in the position of the final status between the PLO and Israel that can't be bridged. Washington also does not have a realistic view to change the situation.
In Hamas-Fatah agreement, this former senior official in the Mossad assessed there has been no sign of Hamas will do a "metamorphosis", but he acknowledged Hamas began to show more softening stance on Israel. "By making the process of reconciliation with the PLO faction controlled by Fatah, Hamas must accept the agreement between the PLO and Israel." he said.

The tension between Britain and Argentina on the Falklands Islands territorial dispute (or the Malvinas in Spanish) is heating up after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez gave his support to the "Tango Country".
At a meeting in Caracas, Venezuela, Chavez and the leaders of the countries that joined in The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA/Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra América)claimed to feel called in England-Argentina conflict, after Britain accused Argentina behave like the colonizers. "The world is upside down. If the British Empire to attack Argentina, Argentina is not alone this time." he said referring to the war in 1982 ago.
ALBA bloc which consists of Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba, Bolivia, Dominica, Ecuador, Antigua and Barbuda, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Haiti have also agreed to reject the ship of Falkland Islands-flagged docked in their ports. The attitude was in line with the commitment of the South American trade bloc, Mercosur which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
On the other hand, Britain sent the HMS Dauntless destroyer to the Falkland Islands waters. The ship which capable of launching missiles at targets as far as 112 kilometers was scheduled to arrive a few weeks. Nevertheless, the British defense secretary Philip Hammond argued that the Dauntless delivery only a routine assignment. The ship would be involved in humanitarian operations which was also attended by Prince William, grandson of Queen Elizabeth II. He arrived in the Falkland islands on Thursday (February 2, 2012) and would settle for six weeks. "He is there as a SAR pilot (Search and Rescue). It is routine and the delivery of humanitarian operations. All air force pilots and the SAR of the British navy ever take part in the Falklands and Prince William does it now." Hammond said.
Punta Arenas - Port Stanley flight route is the only civil aviation in the Falklands. A British diplomat told the Guardian newspaper, closure of this route is tantamount to isolate the Folkland islands.
However, Cameron insisted on refusing to hold talks with Argentina and called Argentina as occupier in order to retake the Falklands.
The islands inhabited by about 300 people was ruled by Britain since 1983 ago. On 2 April 1982, thousands of soldiers Argentina moved to occupy Port Stanley, the city as far as 1552 kilometers in south of Buenos Aires. This action sparked a 74-day war which claimed the lives of 649 Argentine soldiers and 255 British soldiers. In June 1982, London regained control of the Falkland Islands.
For most of the Argentina people, the issue of sovereignty of Malvinas Islands is still a sensitive issue. In Buenos Aires, posters and graffiti with a call to reclaim the Malvinas is the plural encountered. Similarly, the tattoo of a map of the Malvinas and the flag of Argentina in the body of young people in the "Tango Country".
Strong support from the Argentina people to the government to retake the Malvinas was reflected in the Ibarometro poll. On average since 2009, the support reached 65%-70% of respondents. But that number jumped to 74% after British Prime Minister David Cameron threw his criticism.

■ Snowy Scenes From Across Europe
Extreme weather that killed hundreds of people in Eastern Europe, yesterday, began to move into Western Europe. Temperatures that reached minus 30 o celsius to make hundreds of flights in the UK was delayed.
Heathrow Airport, London, decided to reduce its routes due to heavy snow and freezing temperatures yesterday. Bad weather was predicted to continue.
Heathrow Airport operator, BBA, ensuring one-third or approximately 200 flights flight of the world's busiest airports were delayed yesterday. No less than 18 thousand passengers of various airlines had to change their flight schedules.
BBA's decision to delay the flight never happened in late 2010. At that moment, Heathrow did not operate for five days.
Passengers were not only experienced disappointment at Heathrow Airport, London, England. Due to bad weather and cold temperatures, hundreds of passengers were forced to spend the night at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, yesterday. Many airlines at the airport had to delay the flight.
In Eastern Europe, the victim died of temperatures that reached minus 33 oCelsius continues to grow. Ukraine's Emergencies Ministry reported a total of 122 people were killed in eight days. Of that total, 78 victims were found dead in the street even.
Previously it was reported the death toll in Eastern Europe until last weekend as a whole has reached 220 people.
As far as the eye could see in the hamlet Ozerkovici, Mt Romanija, near Sarajevo, Bosnia, lies a giant white carpet. No more green foliage. The white color seems to dominate everywhere, covering about 6,500 homes in the area. Heavy snow two weeks ago is the cause of the sight.
The condition was far from pleasant. Imagine if your home is buried in a pile of snow that reach 5 meters, while the cold air in the house reach minus 30 ocelsius. The condition was perceived Ozerkovici villagers.
To save the residents, emergency response officials of Bosnia should dispel the snow. They also deployed a number of helicopters for food supply get to Ozerkovici.
A few days ago, the supply was up in an Orthodox Christian monastery attended by a nun. With a body wrapped in a thick black jacket and scarf, Sister Justina welcomed members of the rescue team arrived. "I live alone here," said Justina. "But God help me," she said.
Situation experienced by Sister Justina was also felt by thousands of others who live in countries neighboring Bosnia, such as Serbia. Authorities reported at least 11 thousand people besieged by heavy snow storms in the mountains of Serbia. The officers struggled to evacuate the sick people in remote areas by sending the food aid and fuel to turn on the heater.
"We do whatever it takes to open the road since the snow fell heavily. Moreover the snowstorm was predicted to come back in a few days," said Predrag Maric, a Serbian police officer.
Serbia, Bosnia, Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Czech Republic, and several other countries in Eastern Europe hit by a severe winter since a few weeks ago. Most of Western Europe were also affected by extremes winter.
Until last week, the death toll from the coldest temperatures over the past few decades has reached more than 220 people. This winter also has invited thousands of residents to hospitals, especially in Eastern Europe.
However, the most severe pain actually experienced by the homeless. In Ukraine, most of the extreme temperatures victims were the homeless who were found dead in the streets. Many of the poor died because they did not have time to get help.
Last week, the Ukrainian government reported 122 people were killed. A total of over 1,000 people admitted to hospital due to a number of hypothermia and frostbite. The condition was exacerbated by the limited hospital facilities. To overcome it, the Ukrainian government set up 2,000 tents that equipped with heating and food. That way, the poor could live temporarily in the tents and got the free meals provided by the government.
Homeless problem also faced by the Polish government. Polish government spokesman, Malgorzata Wozniak, said victims of the most extreme temperatures were the homeless. With the influence of alcohol, many homeless people lived in buildings o Celsius below zero. Eventually, they died without getting help.
Many homeless people who died making the Poland authority to invite the community to lend a hand. The residents were asked to provide assistance to the homeless to live in their homes.
In the capital city of Poland, Warsaw, last week the temperature reached minus 22 o celsius at night. The local government then provided specific homeless shelter called Monar. There were clothes dryers and warm soup bowls in a shelter.
Martyna, unemployed, pregnant, was deeply grateful to be living in the shelter. "It's the only safe place for me," said the woman who had left by her spouse and expelled from the family. "I can live and shelter from cold temperatures," said 22-year-old woman. "I have no place to go," she said.
Two brothers, Robert (32 years) and Wieslaw (27) who come from a new Inowroclaw arrived in Warsaw. They were originally promised a job. Apparently, they had to float as the promised jobs did not exist. In the midst of very cold temperatures, the brothers chose to stay temporarily in shelters provided by the government.
Special shelters for the homeless has been filled with approximately 278 people. "We do not have to worry anymore because we can spend the night here," said Wieslaw. "The air is very cold outside so you will not want to leave this place," he said.
Last week, the Polish firefighters said 11 people were killed in their homes. All the victims were asphyxiated after sucking carbon monoxide derived from coal charcoal that was used as heating material.
Cold temperatures and heavy snow has forced 180 schools closed in Romania. Three ships were stuck in the frozen Danube River. The third ship was coming from Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania.
In Bulgaria, 16 cities hit by the coldest temperatures in the last century. Consequently, the 1070 schools across Bulgaria closed temporarily. Cold weather with rain snow has made a number of flights in the UK, the Netherlands, and Turkey was postponed.

In the process of making candy, heating temperature greatly affects the candy. Accuracy of the thermometer as temperature measurement is also important to note.
There are several types of candy based on the temperature used: Thread, Soft ball, Firmball, Hard ball, soft crack, hard crack, Clear liquid, Brown liquid and Burnt Sugar.
Marshmallows on the market today are almost flooded with imports from countries such as from China and Japan. There was found a marshmallow-shaped products with no any information that could be read. This is because the information was contained on packaging and printed in Japanese characters (Katakana, Hiragana or Kanji characters). So there was no information at all that could be read even in English, except at the bottom of the packaging was written "Product of Japan".
Talking about Japanese products --especially for marshmallows or jelly products that use gelatin-- according to one Japanese businessman, since the mad cow cases outbreak again, the people of Japan and almost all manufacturers prefer to use pork gelatin and avoid to use beef gelatin. Therefore when looking at Japanese products that use gelatin and have no outstanding permits for food imports, it means the product is an illegal product. Illegal products could have been devoted to the local community that have no problem with the pig gelatin. If it is so, then it complements the suspicion to stay away and not to buy such products.
Marshallow in its development prospects for the future is good. This is because the processing of marshmallow can be developed with a variety of flavors and shapes. Various extracts can be used to produce a variety of flavors such as vanilla extract and almond extract so that the resulting product is not static. Making marshmallows based on the use of temperature is also one of the important reasons why the future development of marshmallow is good, because the use of different temperatures also produces different marshmallow products.

In one study, several scientists invited children, one by one to get into an empty room. There was a marshmallow in the room. The scientists said the children who walked into the room, "You can have this marshmallow right now, but if you wait while I take care of an errand, you can have two marshmallows when I return."
Then the scientist came out. Guess what happened? Some children jumped at the marshmallow when the scientists came out. Others waited a few minutes before they finally gave up. But others were determined to wait. They closed their eyes, laid their heads, singing, playing, or sleeping. When the scientists returned, he gave a marshmallow to the children who had been waiting for it.
When the children were growing up, something extraordinary happened. Children who have the fortitude to wait marshmallow, generally they become teenagers who appeared to adapt more easily, more popular, more courageous, more confident and independent. Children who were more quickly succumb to the temptation, it was likely they would become the lonely children, easily frustrated and stubborn. They collapsed under the pressure and did not like the challenge.

Now, the analogy of the marshmallow with love. Sometimes when we wait for God to love relationships, we struggle in our hearts as experienced by the children. Waiting is the job requires a belief in the goodness and wisdom of God. We develop patience when we believe that God does not give us what we think is good today only because it has something better for us.
The single is a gift. God made this period as an unparalleled opportunity to give full devotion to God. And as a time to grow and serve that we should not allow to be missed. Singleness is a gift. Let us rejoice in it and enjoy the opportunities that exist today. Let's practice to trust God by first seeking the truth with all our hearts and let God makes the plan.
William Booth wrote, "Do not let anyone embed the ideas or instill into the hearts of the girls that marriage is the ultimate goal of their lives. If you instill the idea, do not be surprised if they are engaged with the first stupid and useless that they encounter."
Women and men should get married when God wants it in their lives, not because the social pressure or other things. So, for the women and single men out there, let's wait patiently. God is preparing the best for us. I'm single and very happy and so are you.
