Cisca Zarmansyah added 40 new photos to the album Norwegian Armed Forces in Afghanistan, 2005.
Norway has joined a NATO member since the organization was founded in Washington... in 1949. NATO's goal was to ensure the security, freedom and independence of its member states, and promoted the principles of democracy and the growth of democratic institutions in the North Atlantic region.
In April 2004, the number of NATO members grew by seven countries - Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia - to 26 countries. This was the second time developing and NATO membership included the former state of Warsaw Pact. Previously was in 1999, when Koruna/Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland became a member.
Norway was actively involved in ensuring that the newly joined countries were ready to became a member.
In August 2003, NATO took over the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. This was the first time this organization was involved in military operations outside Europe. ISAF is the NATO's largest operation.
NATO led the operations in Kosovo (KFOR), Bosnia and Herzegovina (SFOR) until December 2004, when the EU (EUFOR) took over. NATO was also involved in promoting stability and regional cooperation in other countries. Albania, Croatia and Macedonia were participating in the preparatory program of the Alliance membership (MAP - Membership Action Plan), while Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro joined the PFP program at the Riga Summit.
Terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001 refers to the Article 5 declaration (joint response for an attack on member state) in NATO's history. Since then, the war against international terrorism and weapons of mass destruction in large quantities be the main concern of the organization. As a result, this has resulted in reforms, including reorganizing its military defense capabilities.
In July 2004, NATO trained the mission in Iraq (NTM-I) to assist Iraqi security forces training program. The curriculum also included the instruction in terms of values that controlled the army in a democratic manner.
Since July 2005, NATO has also provided transportation and organizational support to the peacekeeping operation in Darfur, which led the African Union (AU).
NATO has outreach programs and complete cooperation with partner countries such as Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. NATO is also working with Russia and Ukraine.
Furthermore, NATO also conducted the dialogues with seven countries located around the Mediterranean (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia) and four countries in the Middle East (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain). The purpose of this dialogue was to enhance cooperation in regional stability and security.
Currently the Secretary General of NATO is Jaap de Hoop ScThheffer.

Almira Izzati: helloooo, ...i can't wait for your most romantic story in the battlefield of Afghanistan...
Jan Pepijn Servaas : OSLO - Norway Four soldiers were killed. Sunday, in a single roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan. So reports the Norwegian newspaper, Verdens Gang, the issue of "online" (in network) in Oslo. All soldiers were deployed in Faryab province, said the military spokesman in Oslo Norway, as quoted by the report. The spokesman said the attack had been launched by militants. If the most recent casualties were officially confirmed, the number of Norwegian soldiers who died in Afghanistan would rise to 9 people. Cisca Zarmansyah : These days I feel a thousand flavors to the soldiers profile. First, there are men and women. Physically, men are more powerful than women. And there are the soldiers, the men who are more powerful than civilian men. Although there are women soldiers, but I've never seen directly the women soldiers in combat (◄:: http://www.youtube.com/wat ch?v=x4QjXWcvbhg), maybe they work with a position that is more "comfortable" in the corps unity. So, to me, a soldier is a man+. So, when I saw the soldiers crying, of course it's because the soldiers are human beings, too.
Adriaan Zef : honey, you're very sensible and virtuous.

Who makes these changes? I shoot an arrow right. It lands left. I ride after a deer and find myself chased by a hog. I plot to get what I want and end up in prison. I dig pits to trap others and fall in. I should be suspicious of what I want. (Who Makes These Changes ─ Jalaluddin Balkhi Rumi).

One of ten children in conflict areas get involved in war, it means about 300 thousand children are involved in wars around the world. (Based on the results of non-profit research agency International Warchild)
According to the organization, children are used as soldiers because they are more obedient, no resistance and easier to be manipulated than adults. The definition of child soldiers are children who become soldiers, participated in battle, involved in crossfire, become the spy and sent to reconnaissance missions, those on guard and carry the guns, those who bring war logistics through the forest and valley, and give sexual satisfaction to the commander.

Pranay Suresh : Very proud I'm referring to your idea. Memsahib, you're inspired by the commander!
Adriaan Zef : Recruitment of children to become soldiers is a violation of UN convention on children's rights. In the convention is clearly told that children are those aged under 18 years old, and they should be in neutral zone, they shall not engage in war. Not just to be a soldier holding a weapon, but to be a messenger or a spy war is also not allowed. Anyway all things related to war and conflict, children should not be involved. The consideration is their psychological factor. Pressure on war situation will affect a child's life. They will be stressed and it affects their mental development. Let alone the children, even the adults can have a stress caused by war trauma!
Pranay Suresh : yeah, all countries should abide by the convention, so their rights around the world can be assured. After all, this convention is built on legal system and a variety of diverse cultural traditions, so it can be applied universally.
Adriaan Zef : Gee, the government must respect the dignity and worth of every individual, regardless of race, color, sex, language, religion, opinions, origins, wealth, birth status or ability. And because it applies to every human in the world, then the perpetrators of infringement should get sanctions as set out in it. (http://www.unicef.org/crc/)
Valentino Vie : isolate it! do the embargo!
Cisca Zarmansyah : The cost to employ them as soldiers is cheap. They don't have a job, their parents are also willing and don't mind if they work as soldiers, they're also unemployed, while their parents can get money. It can be used as an excuse for those children not in school, and this is also an investment for military. The openly acceptance from government does not exist. The guerrillas are still a lot, there are rebel forces, there are armed forces. In Africa, according to my knowledge, they are used for internal purposes, such as stealing the diamond or resolve the ethnic conflict. Generally, to solve this problem needs the oversight of civil society, from then on it can affect the local and central government, or the businesses to employ them.
The problem of employing them as whatever is the cultural issue. Communities that employ them don't see the significance. They don't realize that children have a right to school. So, in my opinion, it's important to solve this problem by supporting and motivating the civil society. Child soldiers are usually encountered in conflict countries. In Africa, this will depend on transnational and international treaties, because in Africa it depends on traditional and non traditional security. The UN is also involved in security maintainance. Many international NGOs goes there due to the insufficient local resource to oversee the civilian. Now we just look at how the international NGOs see the cultural and systemic context of each region.
CieL- FreYa Ceastle : This is additional info for you:
Through history and culture, children have been involved longer in military. They initially only worked to help. Their stories were exist in the past, like the Hittite in Egyptian legend, or Hercules and Hylas in Greek legend. British soldiers also used them as one of their important groups in war. It could be found at Agincourt war, when they and "their children" were massacred by French.
Although it was clear that the act wasn't wise and ruthless, Roman soldiers also used them in war, but they only used the services of children aged more than fifteen years. In the middle ages in Europe, young boys 12 years old were used as messengers. In practice, the role of children were confined only to help the needs of logistics, not involved in firefight.
In US, there was also children role in war. Bugler John Cook even got a medal of honor for his services during civil war of Antietam on September 17, 1872 in Maryland, it was the bloodiest war in US history. Long before that, the emperor Nicholas I of Russia also used the services of Jewish children as cantonist in 1827.
For the present, one of military agencies who recruits child soldiers is South Sudan Liberation Army (SPLA / Sudan People's Liberation Army). Fortunately, through an agreement with UN, in 2010 South Sudan has promised to stop recruitment of them. And SPLA has also established children protection units to realize the promise.
Although SPLA has relieved from duty about 20 thousand children, but the UN estimates it requires a long process. Since the mid 1980s, UNICEF has played its role to liberate the children who are bound by the armed forces and rebel groups in Afghanistan, Angola, Burundi, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Uganda.
In Angola, after ceasefire agreement in April 2001, the process of children soldiers disarmament has begun. About 8000 children have been recruited in Angola during civil war. UNICEF has educated them and provided the health services. Moreover, due to their trauma, they were also given the counseling services.(JPS-M/01/11/11/CZ-LA)
Valentino Vie : I agree with you, baby. It is a sad fact that over 3400 years of written history, mankind only recognize 250 years of peace. But the instinct to self defence brings awareness that the way to a war without boundaries is very detrimental, so that people started to conduct barring limitation, established the provisions that governed the war between nations. We already know about the international humanitarian law / law of armed conflict, it has a history as old as war itself. Today it's recognized as a legal system, and that's really universal.
Child protection is an issue for every child in every country in the world. In international armed conflict though, children who are not part of the hostilities are protected by international humanitarian law. Geneva Conventions of 1949 and Additional Protocols of 1997 provide the special protection to them. In fact, if it's true there are children who become part of the adults hostilities, they still don't lose their right to special protection.
As an example, with the attacks on civilian settlements in Qana zone, it is easily to accuse Israel of committing war crime. Remember Palestine at the end of 2008. By the instrument of humanitarian law (Geneva Conventions of 1949, Additional Protocols 1977, and Rome Statute of ICC), it can be said that Israel has committed of war crimes.
Pranay Suresh: You're right dude. Protecting children from violence, aggression and bombardment of products subjected to hostility between adults around them is the responsibility and humanitarian obligations. They are not participants of war and not part of hostilities. They should be guaranteed as a neutral zone and peaceful region. They are the sons and daughters of the reassuring life.
Cisca Zarmansyah: Their situation was very vulnerable during the holocaust. Remember how the Nazis supported the slaughter of children from the "unwanted" or "harm" groups in accordance with their ideological views, either as part of the "racial struggle" or as a preventive measure for security. Germany and its collaborators also killed them with ideological reasons as well as revenge on the perpetrator, or accused, partisan attacks!
Adriaan Zef : My dear, you certainly still remember the telephone interview between Christiane Amanpour with Tzipi Livni
Valentino Vie: It's so much suffering to them. Killed, lost their parents because their parents were killed, maimed, abducted, lost the right to education and health, suffering from injuries, mental trauma and emotional depth.
They who are forced to leave their homes, displaced from their own homes, are particularly vulnerable to violence, sexual exploitation, disease, malnutrition, and death. They can be deployed and used as child soldiers in a very large scale. The status as girl also provides additional risk, particularly in sexual assault. A flagrant violation of children's rights occurs in an atmosphere of impunity which is so widespread.
No more polite sentence than saying that the perfect happiness can be counted on fingers.
