If Not Civilizations, What? Samuel Huntington Responds to His Critics
www.foreignaffairs.com
It's all very well to point to scattered events that the "civilizations" paradigm does not explain. But there is still no better framework with which to understand the post-Cold War world.
In terms of the press, we must remember that the mass media, TV, radio or newspaper consider the event of people biting dog is more important than the people bitten by the dog.Discourse of "Islamophobia" has always sparked the fury inside of me to criticize even accused the West and its media that always show the image of a minor, not only for Islam and Muslims, but also extends to everything that smells of Arabia. Indeed, the critique of the Western press tilted attitude is a must, but the criticism should be proportional.
There's a brief indication that some of the socio-political order in Islamic world try to reach the power by carrying the banner of Islam and exploiting the issue of "Islamophobia". The most unfortunate thing is the stigma (that Islam is a terrorist) first appeared in the Arab world. It was built by some circles who acted in the name of religion as the guardianship of reason and conscience. It was built by people who wanted to maintain this trust by reducing the significance of theology in social and political life. In such conditions, there was distortion of action.
The demands of separation between religion and the power of trias politica is understood as a call for the elimination of a priori attitude of religion from the stage of life. More naive than that, no more open space for discussion and dialogue to discuss the history of religious thought of thinking critically, or to discuss how the religious sect is able to exist in a social-historical context so that it managed to donate treasures of our intellectual property, particularly at the level of ideas and ideas , paradigm and conception. There has been a shift in values, where some paradigms and historical conception now (unfortunately) has turned into the dogma of the absolute, a historical and can't be contested. I don't want to open the old wounds by describing the case examples, because I think the indications above are perfectly adequate.
It became a necessity for me to review the analysis of the Western phobia of Islam. I hope here I don't get stuck in puddles of hyperbole that has trapped many people. The opportunity to live outside during the last few years has trained me to be able to see from a distance (out sight) and comprehensive and of course, to uncover the details and intricacies of "the West" which has contributed to my scholarly discourse.
Therefore, I see the urgency of distinction and separation between the paradigm of "Western Civilization" which is owned by the West and "Western Politics". The first paradigm is more indicates the set of multi-system -- and not a single system -- of philosophy, thought, culture and politics, in addition to multi-systems such as architecture, art and literature. The second paradigm, "Western Politics" further indicates the collaboration of political systems and ideologies that are reigning in hemisphere countries of Europe and the United States. The parasystem and ideology are not necessarily able to articulate the values of modern civilization. Nor has the political determination by the political systems in Western countries, it's not necessarily to reflect the consequences of an ideal civilized behavior in the reality of action and its orientation.
No doubt that the attitude of Western politics is more controlled by the relationship of interest, which is a new chapter for the phase of imperialist ambitions, implemented in the order of global market. This new imperialism surfaced in the West infringement actions over the territorial boundaries of the National Authority, which led to the planting of the Zionism power in Palestine and the expulsion efforts and emptying Palestinian lands of its original owner.
The series of violations and repression is also still ongoing in the nation and children of Iraq. Therefore, the sentiment on the West and its facilities and its pre facilities is not something I choose or I reject. A priori and condemn only show the lowest level of weakness of faith in the conduct of nationalism. The national scholars shouldn't only blaspheme and reject the Western politics by using all the facilities and infrastructure, as well as through the pulpits of thought, culture, Eastern and Western press, but they also must have the courage to loudly voice their condemnation of acts of government systems in Arab world that should bear the responsibility for current global conditions.
It's not wise if we are just beating the drums over the West Politics critical, but we simply remove the responsibility of the authorities (Arab governments) that have acted upon the people of their authoritarian by closing the gap on all the resistance and criticism from the people. Muslim attitudes to "the West as Modern Civilization" must form a critical interaction and pro-active and not for pragmatic oriented, not only be the importer of Western technology product without knowing the basics of science and its epistemic. Another consequence of a critical interaction form is that Muslims should also not be stuck on the importation of scientific and epistemic "theories", then apply them as the face value with different climate from the producing countries.
To build the scientific community, or at least to create a climate conducive to scientific thinking, needs the Muslim perspective on Western supremacy. Without the concept of dynamic psycho-intuitive, then Muslims will not be able to outperform the modern civilization. More ironic is that the rise and progress of the campaign (which many voiced by some quarters) is still preoccupied with issues of science and technology, without touching the discourse of human sciences development by interaction with the achievements of the humanities methods in Modern Western Civilization.
Those who produce science and technology are they who since their childhood forged in a scientific environment with practical exercises to actively ask (curiosity), flip through all the possibilities, making sense of all the answers before choosing one of them, willingly let go of the belief (the truth of a case) if it is proved to be less comprehensive. And more importantly, don't accept the mainstream opinion in reserve without criticism and reasoning. This is called as a method of skeptism, check and re-check, review , vis-a-vis with the method of faith fatalism, pseudo-faith, blind obedience and imitation. How much more should we learn? Muslims need not be shy to ask this question. If the West had not learned from those before them in the stomach of Civilization, of course they will not be able to be like this now.
That is something surprising and ridiculous, that although the Muslims by hating the hell out "of Western political" due to their unilateral actions on the interests of Muslim nations, but they were always too busy to death with their image in the eyes of the Western mass media. This paradoxical fact makes me wonder, sometimes even cynical, because their principal concern and thoughts actually have to focus on how they create a positive image of (real) about themselves and their condition. This fact is further tempting me to ask a question, "Why do not Western people care about their image in the eyes of Muslims? Why do not they (even the slightest) pay attention to the perceptions and views of Muslims for them, while Muslims are always busy watching the West's perceptions and views on them?
Is this the reality of a unilateral "interference" in psychology that can be called as one form of the complications disease? I don't know the terms of this disease in the discipline of psychology. They were like a "lover in the overseas", who always preoccupied with thoughts about what she/he was thinking by his/her lover who was in far distance there.
This is a theatrical form that articulates the problem of Muslim historical interaction with the West in the last two centuries, manifested in their ambivalent views on one side that the West is the "teacher" and "modern figure" who should be their teachers and their respect, but on the other side, the West -- for Muslim --also a vicious enemies and occupiers who should be fought.
The theory of "conspiracy"-that thrive on self-Muslims have reached the limit of being "The Interpreted" who shield themselves from having to bear the burden of responsibility by throwing all the blame on others. The West --even in this theory-- is described as searching for new strategic enemy after the collapse of Soviet Union. And characteristics of the enemies of this caliber only in Islam. Actually, the Western view of Islam is not an aesthetic view-stagnant as perceived in some people. There is a distinction between the views of "Europe" as a whole with a view of "America" on Islam. American political and media attention on Islam started with the victory of Islamic Revolution (in 1979) in Iran, which was politically resulted in the occupation of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, the captivity of several U.S. citizens and the failure steps of the U.S. military and embassy to free the captives.
This historical fact can easily be understood that the most dominant factor in affecting the formation of opinion in the U.S. over-political Islam is the mainstream. Mainstream is what ultimately gave birth to the theory of "Clash of Civilisations", a futuristic theory that had appalling the European region, as well as the Muslims, of course, with different degrees of shock respectively. This Political Mainstream makes the U.S. foreign policy does not give much attention to the characteristics of a government system portion of a country in global diplomacy. However the U.S. will support a system of government as radical as long as not to interfere with their interests. No wonder, if the U.S. -- at a certain moment -- can work with Omar Abdel-Rahman and Osama Bin Laden, but in an instant can turn into a fierce and demanding the head of both, alive or dead.
But at any given time, the U.S. remains an open relationship with several prominent and militant organizations as preventive measures for any possible sudden, no matter how small it is. This is just one side. On the other hand, the U.S. communication with the radicals also play a role among all the decision makers in the U.S. and several radical Islamic leaders, terrorist leaders -- even as the power of "phobia"-- to scare the political system in the Arab world and the Islam world is on track to continue the policies that have been outlined by the U.S.. The same role played by the U.S. to perpetuate the status quo in the Gulf. Although the U.S. had to pay dearly to finish off the Iraqi in holistically to include the people, history, tradition and civilization.
The view of "Europe" of Islam, although preceded by a bad precedent by political imperialism played by Europe since the Crusades, but the image is now slowly starting polarized in the press, politics and academia. It should be understood that the various events of "bomb" exploded, "tourists" were killed, "A Coptic Christians" attacked a Muslim, the legal verdict of an author or artist is an easy dish for the press anywhere to analyze, comment on and invite the experts to explain their opinion in a single issue. Dramatization of event or exaggerating the incident has become a certainty in the world press. However, the source and the main event is our own engineering and product of our own reality that we never reflect critically and comprehensively. A picture of mass media -- even dramatized with a combination of colors -- but in the end, it is not the engineering of the zero. Is the author of the news can be charged with full of responsibility although he was proved to dramatize the shooting, showing the sides of the negative and exaggerate it--- without involving the original actors and the real culprits? Did the Western press manipulate the performance of madness and folly that was held by the Taliban that imprisoning the women and prohibits the art in the name of Islam? This is the dimension of mass media.
Turning to political issues, we must understand that the political outlook of Europe over Islam differs from one country to another, the more so in the case of fluctuations in the number of Muslim immigrants into European countries. There are some "fear" will be swelling this number. Some are still within reasonable limits, legal and there is also to be over (France and Germany for example). There are also some countries which are also to be persuasive in trying to understand and interact with reality (Dutch and English). The academic view of Islamic studies at several institutions and universities in Europe in the outline sufficiently to give a positive contribution to Islam. Academic contribution is not only deserves our respect and honor, but the more real we should follow up with the exchange of students and professors.
My statement does not mean that the fanaticism --which Edward Said has been scientifically decomposed in several book -- has become a tradition remains of the past. Fanaticism still continues to have wide influence in academic institutions and mass media and the centers of decision-makers. But I must admit it, "fanaticism" is a common sign between them and them. The level of thinking, their clergy, both of Islam and Christian -- together against the discrimination experienced by Roger Garaudy, the French thinker who brought to court just because a book he wrote (about the ins and outs of the Jewish rebellion). In response to this court, their clergy rise up to defend the freedom of thought and expression. Striking differences surfaced when this incident occurred on their own in the Islamic world, their clergy fell silent a thousand languages. The similar silent and indifferent actions outbreak in the academy centers in the West when it should address the Garaudy court and banning the books, music or the court of a writer in the Islamic world.
Criticism of the West should not be forever used as a guise to get cleaned up and glorify the ego as imitative as applicable in our press discourse. And what I think is significant for all religions to work together to face the danger of a new religion is "Globalization".
Labelling of market governance within globalization scope as the laws set by the new religion called "market" is not an allegory of their own language, but rather a description of a closed and implicit in the discourse of political and cultural globalization. In political discourse, there are some circles-such as Fukuyama, who predicted the end of history and the cessation of the era of ideology. The concept of "The End of History" is a religious concept par Excellent. In the sense that every religion in its emergence phase is always opposite of the claim itself as the last Missionary to free mankind from suffering. Fukuyama claimed that history had reached the last stop, and then stagnate. There is no other way for mankind except to enjoy the paradise of "capitalism" and the paradise of democracy according to the American pattern.
However, Fukuyama's prediction is still limited in the scope of ideology without ever moving permanently to a utopian level of religion and association of other paradigms such as the approaching "Day of Judgement", which was manifested on the day of absolute fairness in compensation for people who suffer the injustice in this world.
In the religion of "globalization" there is no compensation in another world. There is no iota of entertainment possibilities for the weak and oppressed. As an ideology that is always to reproduce itself, Fukuyama-futuristic predictions that from the outside looking optimistic-is also changing metamorphosis into a "prediction" is full of pessimistic black in the hands of Huntington in the concept of his "Clash of Civilization".
But which civilization would be predicted by Huntington in conflict and a trade mark of the 21st century? Huntington states that culture is all ancient civilizations who replaced the modern western civilization. That is "Asia" civilization -- China and Japan in particular --, "Africa" and by definition is a "Islam" civilization.
Huntington didn't mention anything about "Christian Fundamentalism" in America itself, or the "Jewish Fundamentalism" in Israel, though both these fundamentalism has strongly opposed the values of its modernity and secularization. Huntington didn't mention the details of this event at all, because he was more fixated on a single definition: create the enemy "new" which replaced the "Red Devils". It does not matter whether the new enemy is the "yellow devil", green or even "colorless devil". Most important is the devil is playing the role of "the mask of religion" to face the face of "The Pure" Americans in particular and the "West" in general.
We should not get caught up in the case conducted by the Huntington's equation between the "religion" and "civilization", in which he took from every religion an independent civilization par Excellent with a mission of lifting the Western civilization, not as a constructive building for Civilization Humanism, but rather as one of the many civilizations. Huntington wants to make Western civilization as "the end of history", then put the cultures and religions who regard themselves as still insisted "a civilization" as an enemy of humanism. But when he did not include Christian and Jewish fundamentalism in the classification of a forbidden religion, Huntington then made another classification, the "ideology" that masked political religion. Huntington's paradigm made here were not much different from the paradigm of the fanatical Muslim, except in the surface construction.
What about the paradigm of the Western Christian Church presented by Vatican? How the Vatican's religious paradigm in stemming the flow of political and cultural globalization? It should be noted that despite the decade since the 60's, the Vatican officially recognized Islam as the religion of God in Paul's official documents, but the Vatican has not recognized the prophethood of Muhammad. Muhammad's name had never been mentioned in official documents of the Vatican or in the speeches of Paul.
Christians have recognized the Jewish and the prophethood of Moses. This is the reality of religious history that is undeniable. So naturally, too, in addition to the fusion of Torah and the Gospel in the construction of "Scripture", the Jews became part of Christianity, although this is more impressed with unilateral fusion. Because Jews did not recognize Christianity as a religion and the prophethood of Jesus. Islam, is thus a holistic religion. Islam doesn't deny the Jews or Christians. Islam also recognizes the prophethood of Moses and Jesus, even the recognition of and respect for the Prophet in Islam is an obligation for every adherents. But here they also have to admit that paradogma formed on the top, not because of Muslims tolerance, but rather due to the reality that Islam is the successor religion of Jewish and Christian, as well as the closing of all religions.
And no matter how beautiful its high quality and however the terminology of the dialogue of civilizations and religious, from the theological-political standpoint, we need not expect too much from the "Vatican" in order to interact with Islam as Vatican relations with Jews. Islam also does not need to panic or shock when the Vatican apologized to Jews for the discrimination they once did, but the Vatican did not apologize to Muslims for the sins of the Crusade, because the holistic recognition of Islam as religion and Muhammad as a prophet would destroy the construction of Church theology from its foundations. This is the hidden factor behind the siding unilateral by those who much harm the Islam and Muslims. But, they should not separate the theology from politics and economics, history and interests. From history and interests, Vatican has been able to distinguish between Jewish Contemporary with Jews in the era of Jesus. Jewish Contemporary are separated from the sin of Jesus murder. It is published also in an official document. But in level of common interest which unites the Church history and the Vatican with a history of 18th-century imperialism, the Vatican does not separate between Jewish Contemporary and Historised Jewish, so the historical rights of Jews over Palestinians in general and "al-Quds" in particular becomes an axiom.
Does Islam demand the Vatican to be consistent with themselves? Deleting the Jewish Liberation documents from the sin of Jesus murder? Or announce that in historically, politics, and religion the Contemporary Jewish -- according to the above documents do not kill him -- is a post-Christian generations so that they have no historical claim over Palestine and al-Quds?
I hope you are now able to understand the factors behind the bias implicit in the West against Islam unilateral is deeper than a factor of Islamophobia. Islamophobia is a condition that is created from across the Islamic world itself in its history, but the naive, this condition provides its own justification for Western Politics and Western Media to form an ideology with a bit of a dramatization, by pushing a religion of "globalization" with the blessing of Church and Vatican. In this new religion, Christian Zionists occupies an important position. And the Zionist becomes a new world baby. Is this relevant now to do the Islamisation of laws militaristic - suppression of sense, gender discrimination, and fear to question many things - in order to confront these dangers? A question that must be ejected at the end of my sentence. Keep on fighting!
