"Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter's honor." (Ernest Hemingway)
The action of matador Serafin Marín on Sunday, September 25, 2011 became the last bullfight in the city of Barcelona, Spain. The tradition that has been running for 600 years should be terminated following a government ban in the state capital of Catalonia. Marín has fulfilled his last duty to fight six bulls at La Monumental stadium witnessed by at least 18 thousand visitors on Sunday afternoons. Although the ticket price has increased eight times than the normal price, but it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the community.
Bullfight ban is supported in part people who think the freedom of civilians to be violated with the passing of tradition. They are also happy, because this ban is seen as a step towards ending the barbaric behavior of animals.
Although bullfighting has been banned for decades in the state of Catalonia, but Barcelona still held the bullfight for several times. But now the capital of Catalonia is finally be subject to regulation that prohibits the implementation of bullfighting throughout Catalonia.
Last year, the Catalonia legislators proposed the ban on bullfighting, things just happened for the first time in Spain. 180,000 people signed a petition to pass the proposal. The biggest reason was bullfighting was barbaric. But, many political opponents who would appeal to the Supreme Court of Spain. Catalonia Government argued that the prohibition was intended to distinguish Catalonia from another state in Spain. According to them, a bullfight was identical with the Spanish state (Spanish speaking), and it was different from Catalonia (Catalan-speaking).
For activists and some people, the ban reflects the attention to the prolonged suffering experienced by animals being tortured for entertainment reasons. The first bullfight in Barcelona was first recorded in 1387. Since then, thousands bull had met their deaths, and after the show most of their bodies ended with a sale to butcher or preserved for display.
