Some days I read a script about moderate Islam. At first I was just curious to know more about what and how exactly the concept of moderate Islam that developed in the international academic world. But after reading a number of papers on this issue, a number of questions arise in my mind, because a number of explanations about moderate Islam to be a bit far away when it looked for its relevance to the context of Libya.
First, some ideas mention that moderate Islam is a product of American extremism. In other words, this term is invented to describe a group or individual Muslims who are in line with American ideas and attitudes, particularly in political attitudes. Therefore, the context of moderate Islam with the first meaning is nothing other than the political moderation. This political moderation can indeed understandable, because the greatest enemy to be feared by America is radical Islam, so if it's getting a lot of Muslims who have moderation in politics, the more securely the American agenda is also executed. In this case similarly, it becomes understandable when Joseph S Nye Jr., suggested that Bush shoulnd't only use the soft power and hard power, but also combined both elements into the smart power.
By Daniel Pipes, an American scientist who is known as the one who does not like Islam, the smart power is defined as the administration, position or privilege. Perhaps because of the moderate Islam nature in the sense of political moderation such that then pushed Abid Ullah Jan (an opponent of the Moderate Islam idea) to split the moderate Islam into four groups: the academic neo-mods, political neo-mods, journalists neo-mods and under-the-belt neo-mods.
For Jan, the moderate Muslims are those who have been bought by Americans through a number of media. And it's not hard to find the models of people like this. According to Jan, Akbar S Ahmed and Muqtedar Khan are the part of academic neo-mods, while people like Irshad Manji (the author of The Trouble with Islam) is the representation of under-the-belt neo-mods.
Second, the moderate Islam is also interpreted as the doctrinal liberalization. Back to Ali Mazrui, he gave an example such as Mahmoud Mohammed Taha in Sudan. According to Mazrui, although Taha was involved in political matters with Ja'far Numeri regime, but what is done with its moderate Islam is the liberalization of doctrine and not a political moderation.
Well, if so, it seems there's a tendency for simply equated with the terms of moderate Islam with the other predicates such as progressive and liberal. At this point I find the confusion. Then, if it is drawn in the context in Libya, according to me, the meaning of moderate Islam is not appropriate. Because Libya is not involved in acts of political moderation in the sense desired by the Americans, nor is having or running the liberalization of Islamic doctrine, isn't it?
