China and Taiwan
Chinese President Hu Jintao used a century of Chinese revolution's celebration (which ended the imperial power) by offering further links to Taiwan. He said both countries must move beyond the history that separated them and focusing on economic and cultural interests.
At an event held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, yesterday, Hu emphasized that China and Taiwan had to end the conflict.
"Healing the wounds of the past and work together to achieve great rejuvenation of Tiongoa nation, "he said, "Achieving reunification by peaceful means is the best service for the fundamental interests of Chinese people, including our compatriots in Taiwan." He added that both sides should enhance economic competitiveness, promoting Chinese culture and build the common interests of national identities.
Presiden Hu tried to stay away from threatening rhetoric, even though Taiwan has expressed its refusal to unite with China. It was much different from Beijing's earlier characters, which often opposed the Taiwan's presence.
But the tensions between two countries eased somewhat when the Taiwan president Ma Ying-Jeou to facilitate some agreement in high-tech products trade from Taiwan to Chinese market.
In celebration of a century of Chinese revolution, a giant photograph of the modern China founder, Sun Yat-Sen, emblazoned on the stage where the former officials and Chinese government officials sat. Commemoration was also attended by former Chinese president, Jiang Zemin.
"Sun Yat-Sen is a national hero, a great patriot and great leader of democratic revolution in China," Hu Jintao said in his speech. He also said that the success of China driven by Communist Party.

Although it was not explicitly, Taiwan President Ma Ying-Jeou rejected an appeal from Chinese president Hu Jintao to end the conflict of both parties to achieve reunification peacefully. Ma urged the Chinese government to develop Taiwan's democracy and respect the right to govern its own people. Beijing, according to Ma, "They should not forget the principles of the fathers of the nation and commemorate freedom, democracy and equitable distribution of wealth. "Ma also urged China to respect the history and acknowledge the Taiwan's existence.
Ma's brief speech in front of the president's office followed by a parade of the armed for 1 hour, featuring the attractions of a number of fighter planes, tank fleet, and missile transporter vehicle. At the peak of the event, several pilots equipped with parachute jumped from a helicopter and landed in front of Ma.
Ma's comments and the military attractions symbolically showed a strong stance against the Chinese government that always regarded the Formosa island as one of China provinces.
100th anniversary of Sun Yat Sen's revolution was a reminder of the formation of modern Chinese revolution. 2.5 months after 10 October 1911, Republic of China moved to Formosa island in 1949, following the victory of Mao Zedong on the nationalist faction led by Chiang Kai-Shek.
Meanwhile, Chinese vice foreign minister, Cui Tiankai confirmed the relationship between China and the United States has the potential to deteriorate, because the U.S. decided to offer Taiwan military rejuvenation package worth U.S.$5.85 billion. The threat was supported by the fact that China controled the majority of U.S. bonds.

On October 10, 2011, we celebrated the National Day of Republic of China (ROC) which together with its 100-year celebration of our country was formed. 100 years ago when the rose of Wuchang in 1911, we overthrew the Qing monarchy and established the first republic in Asia. A century later, the existence of ROC (Taiwan) was not only effecting on democracy in Asia and the world, but also established the peace and stability in the region, of which was to form the economic cooperation agreement with China. Our policy was open to diplomacy. Our residents got a free visa facility to visit 123 countries and a number of other regions. Since President Ma Ying-Jeou took office in 2008, Taiwan achieved the remarkable democratic progress in national and international relations. That made the Republic of China became the world's attention.
National developments over the past 100 years have passed with joy and sorrow. After the ROC won the battle against Japan, the government in Taiwan strait in 1949 split into two. Then, ROC that had been successfully cancelling the unfair agreements in 1943 was forced out of the United Nations in 1971.
In the last three years, the government of President Ma was able to make changes to strengthen the global economic crisis facing the ROC. It made the Taiwan people continued to fight and survived with new hope and confidence. With the right policy, President Ma's government to bring his nation to achieve four of the first things accomplished in the history of the ROC.
First, on the Economic Side:
Taiwan's gross domestic product per capita was estimated to exceed U.S. $ 20,000 this year. It made Taiwan was parallel with the developed countries and countries in Asia that became the center of the world's economy. Our efforts to stay open, liberal policy, and participate in regional economic relations enabled us to achieve the goal, namely to strengthen the Taiwan, together with Asia Pacific region and worldwide.
Second, Our Relations with China:
We have maintained the peace and stability in Taiwan strait. Armed with the negotiations in 1992 and a policy consensus of "There is no merger, No independence and No use of military force", we have won the support, both from domestic and international. The result, Taiwan and Beijing to continue a number of agreements after stalled for 10 years and we managed to conclude 15 agreements of trade and other areas that were changing into more substantive bilateral exchanges, collaborative and mutually beneficial. A peaceful and stable relations between Taiwan and the Republic of chinese people made the agreements between the two parties would be stable in 60 years.
Third, the National Ability to Compete
We have ended the "Closed Door Policy" and made very rapid progress in investment and efficiency in government. That was reflected in the international institute for management development "2011 World Competitiveness Yearbook" that showed the Taiwan's ranking rose to sixth place, and this was a new history for the Republic of China.
Finally, in Foreign Relations:
Our friendship with diplomatic partners has grown stronger as a reciprocal relationship more profitable. We've regained a confidence along with the emergence of cooperation with a number of important countries, including the United States. It's not only that. Seven other countries are now offering the work programme on a holiday to the youth of Taiwan. ROC citizens are also expected to get a free visa facility to enter the United States next year, same as the nations that have helped ROC in international relations. Furthermore, Taiwan's relations with the global market becomes increasingly stronger. For example, we have signed an investment protection agreement with Japan. Now we are in the process of negotiation for the relations of economic cooperation with Singapore, and trade and investment framework agreement with America.
Those positive developments show that our strategy to create peace in Taiwan strait and to develop international business has been working well, and it will continue to grow. In three years of President Ma, we have achieved four important points in the history of Taiwan. We have been transforming, our residents and colleagues have been assured. But, we are still not satisfied with these achievements. Along with ROC that enters the beginning of this second century, we continue to move forward toward our vision. It is the "Golden decade", creating "The Value of Happiness" for our people, and getting stronger role on international map. We are inspired by the peace motivator, development and success from the experience, look far ahead, and liberal politics. With this all, we create a foundation for a bright second century for Chinese republic.

Presidents Afghan Hamid Karzai said his government and NATO failed to ensure the security in Afghanistan after ten years of the Taliban was overthrown. Karzai also accused Pakistan of supporting groups of rivals and said he still needed to be addressed. With a promise for leaving office in 2014, Karzai said he was trying to deal with his successor. His comments came amid a joint statement of the former commander of NATO who said NATO was still far from completion in achieving their mission in that restive country. After ten years of war in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal said that NATO was only reached the progress in the 'half way'.
Karzai acknowledged his weakness when interviewed by BBC. According to him, the military strategy in Afghanistan in the early rankings failed to deal with the Taliban that hiding in tribal areas in northern Pakistan.
"NATO and the United States and our neighbor in Pakistan should focus on something in the past, in 2002-2003 associated with the Taliban hideouts," he said. Karzai remained optimistic despite there were many failures, he was still proud of what he called his achievements in providing the health's convenience, education, and economics.
Speculation says Karzai will try to survive until the term ends in 2014.
"What we have to do is to maintain security for the Afghan people and that's where the international community and Afghan government are clearly failing," said Karzai.
In recent months, Afghanistan was hit by a major attack targeting the army onto the important sites, including the assassination of former president Burhanuddin Rabbani. The main weakness of President Karzai was because he has failed to isolate the Taliban with its attacks. But he added that such problems were coming from abroad, with reference to the role of Pakistan on Taliban.
