Soros' sympathy for bank protests
www.bbc.co.uk
Billionaire investor George Soros says he can sympathise with the Wall Street protests, which show no sign of fading as they enter their third week.
The iconic bull on Broadway was barricaded on Day 1, with a few police officers stationed next to the statue by noon. A crowd of a few hundred protesters turned up that day.
One man who said he's a Vietnam War veteran addressed the crowd on Day 1, spawning cheers and chants.
By Sept. 24, Day 8 of the protest, the crowd had grown and dozens were arrested. Photographer Daniel Fitzsimmons, who took this picture, says: "A protestor dropped to his knees in front of the Chase Bank on Wall St., saying the bank took his parents' house. He was later arrested."
NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said late on Sept. 24 that approximately 80 people were arrested throughout the day, "mainly for disorderly conduct by individuals who blocked vehicular and pedestrian traffic, but also for resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and, in one instance, for assault on a police officer."
Protesters marched down Broadway in Manhattan on Sept. 24. The avenue was shut down.
The NYPD filmed portions of the march. Fitzsimmons says he saw at least two police officers at the scene with handheld digital recorders.
"Police officers rolled out orange nets used to cordon protestors," Fitzimmons says.
Many of the demonstrators waved large signs, and a few wore bandannas or masks over their faces -- including the people pictured here on Day 1.
The Day 8 arrests were a far cry from Day 1, when protesters gathered in Bowling Green Park to practice yoga and tai chi.

Protesters arrested for blocking traffic and trying to hold the unofficial march along the road. The group is protesting the corporate greed, and say they represent 99% of the U.S. population against the 1% richest people. This movement also protested home foreclosures, high unemployment, and bailout funds 2008.
"It's not fair, the government supports the big corporations rather than people," said demonstrator Henry James Ferry.
The police claimed the arrests were made after police several times to give warning to the protesters not to occupy the streets. "Most of them obey the warning, but some actually close the line and walked to the Brooklyn Bridge, so we caught them," said a spokeswoman for local police.
Demonstration against the Wall Street has been held since 17 September in Manhattan and they stayed there. Several hundred people remained camped at Zuccotti Park, not far from Wall Street. In fact, on Friday, about 2,000 people occupied the Wall Street to protest the arrests made in the previous week. On 25 September, as many as 80 people were arrested during the march took place, where most of it is considered disorderly conduct and blocking traffic.
This group was getting the support from several union members. United Federation of Teachers and the Transport Workers Union Local which has 38,000 members were among those who gave the support. A series of small-scale protests were also popping up in other U.S. cities, including Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.
"Occupy Wall Street" videos rapidly circulated on the internet. The protesters were posting the footage of detention and clashed with officers. A message in the Wall Street occupy the site said, "One similarity that we have, we are 99 percent who will no longer tolerate their greed and corruption that only 1 percent."
Another message also highlights the takeover wave that has hit the housing market in the U.S., says, "The Bank is able to restructure the housing with a constant, they get billions and billions of dollars, so that they remain on the surface long enough to steal property from you."
Based on current U.S. national census data, the distance between the middle class to the rich in the U.S. is getting far adrift. After depression, the upper middle class could no longer be there because the calculation of their income is considered not balanced by spending power due to soaring prices. Due to the shift of income classes, now there are 99 percent of citizens in the same group, while the upper class (who belong to the super rich is rich with an average income of hundreds of millions of dollars) occupies only 1 percent of the total population in the U.S..
It was noted the Americans rally on Wall Street to emulate the protests in Arab Middle East, especially the Egyptians who marched and gathered in a circle of al-Tahrir and successfully overthrew Hosni Mubarak.
According to statement released by chairman of the Wall Street occupy, their motion was comprised of various eleman society such as the socialist camp, anti-capitalist and youth. They believed the political system and the U.S. economy was crumbling, the entry of capitalism in government was endangering the poor lives and those on low incomes.
Leader of this movement rated the Wall Street had penetrated into the U.S. political system, economic and social development. This is clearly damaging the national interest, as Wall Street makes profits with the country illegally. The economic crisis faced by the U.S. and the exposure of corruption scandals by a number of large state companies were increasingly adding a negative view of Wall Street people. Many people called the company as "Fat Cats". They believed this "Fat cat" as a trigger for financial crises, bankruptcies, high unemployment and corruption of political elites. Therefore, the "Occupy Wall Street" asked the heart of this economy need to be overhauled and cleaned. According to them, Wall Street needed to be replaced with a clean and humane system.
"Occupy Wall Street" which was rated as the left and socialist movements became a clear example of the left emergence, as it happened in the U.S. conservative right-wing stronghold with Tea Party Movement. Though "Occupy Wall Street" and Tea Party movement has a contradiction ideology, but both have sides in common. They both are not satisfied with the conditions that exist in the U.S. and they try to create a new system in this country. It's good idea, but whether these two movements will be successful or not, it depends by various factors, such as senior political elites, parties and the elites of Wall Street capitalism.

And, of course, in conjunction with this action, Radiohead fans are thrilled. How is it not? Suddenly the news emerged that the alternative rock band is going to appear on the protest show in New York today. Indeed there's no certainty of Radiohead themselves, but considering that it comes from fellow celebrities, this news seems quite reliable. Some celebrities are active in social activities such as Susan Sarandon and Russell Simmons are planning to participate in this event.
The news about the band's presence (fronted by Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood and Phil Selway) is derived from rapper Russell Simmons. "Rumors are circulating saying that Radiohead would appear at # OccupyWallStreet in Liberty sq., NYC at 4 this afternoon," wrote Simmons via Twitter.
Radiohead themselves lately often appears in small-scale events to promote the album the King Of Limbs. Shanananaa....
