Syrian tanks kept pounding Hama
Nearly 140 people killed; Assad praised the Military
In the midst of worldwide condemnation for the attack on Sunday (7/31), Syrian military and the police didn't stop the repression against the opposition activists and demonstrators in Hama. A number of military tanks back to beat this fourth-largest city in Syria, located about 195 kilometers north of Damascus by the fire since about 07:30 pm on Monday (8/1), even, the machine-gun fire still sounded sporadically since the night before. The first day of the holy month of Ramadan does not affect the military to launch the action of repression.
Unconfirmed information mentioned that at least four people were killed in a shooting at a district in northeastern Syria yesterday. It wasn't known how many casualties in the attack yesterday. But the military raids against the protesters and opposition activists on Sunday has caused considerable casualties. Human rights activists said that nearly 140 people died, including about 100 people died in Hama after the army stormed the city center of resistance against the ruling regime.
"That's one day that brings the greatest loss of life in Syria since the anti-government demonstrations," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights based in the UK.
According to Abdel Karim Rihawi, head of the Syrian League for the Defense of Human Rights, at least 136 people were killed across Syria on Sunday. Dozens were wounded. "One hundred civilians are killed in Hama at the time by firing at security forces and military stormed the city," he said. Moreover, according to him, five people were killed in the downtown, Homs and three others killed in the city of Idlib, the northwestern province.
The death toll is predicted to increase, because there are approximately 75-140 other deaths that have not been confirmed.
A number of journalists of foreign news agency reported that local residents didn't dare to collect the corpses in the road. Some hospitals were also flooded with the wounded, so that the estimated death toll to rise significantly in the next few days.
BBC journalist who was in Beirut said that at this time Hama was still under the control of the local population. Tanks and military personnel who tried to master the city last week have been withdrawn to the suburbs in the evening, but then they re-entered the city yesterday.
After isolating the main road to Hama a month ago, the army entered the city of four directions by using the tanks. The locals pelted them with Molotov cocktails, stones, and pieces of wood. "Allahu Akbar!" they cried. Yesterday morning, Hama City looked like a war zone. The sound of gunfire and the boom of tank cannons heard throughout the city. Black smoke billowed from the roof of some houses. Hama city changed as Beirut.
Ironically, Syria's brutal military action even get praise from President Bashar al-Assad. In a speech to mark the 66th anniversary of the Syrian armed forces (which was broadcasted by the news agency SANA) yesterday, Assad praised the military have proved their loyalty to the country and leader. He said, "Their effort and sacrifice will certainly be rewarded. The sacrifice is proven to thwart the enemies of this country, to end the incitement and to defend Syria."
