Senior adviser to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Jan Mohammed Khan was assassinated at his home near the parliament building in Kabul, said a senior government official on Sunday (07/17/2011). The Police said the attack also killed a member of parliament, Hasham Atanwal.
Jan Mohammad Khan, the former governor of Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan and a key ally of President Karzai, was killed in the attack, according to the news channel Tolo TV. The killing came less than a week after Karzai's brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai who was murdered at his home in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan, birthplace of the Taliban. "He (Khan) is very close to Karzai. He is as important as Ahmed Wali Karzai," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Just like Karzai, Khan came from an influential family of the Popalzai tribe in southern Afghanistan's turbulent. According to bios.info afghan, Khan's nephew leads a militia that has 3,000 members in Uruzgan.
His death will further heat up the political shakiness in the south, where Taliban fight the U.S. troops for control of the region.
Some observers have warned that Wali Karzai assassination could trigger a war for control of the south that could strengthen the position of Taliban and turning the control of NATO territory.
Those deaths occurred at a critical time, just days after Canada's 3,000 troops ended their combat mission in Kandahar and in the same week Washington began the reduction of the army, a process that will gradually be completed by the end of 2014. The process of handing over responsibility of security from foreign troops to Afghan forces have also started on Sunday.
The actions of the murder raised doubts on the readiness of Afghan security forces to guard the country. There are about 150,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, nearly 100,000 of that amount comes from the U.S. who have committed this war nearly 10 years. After a long and exhausting war, all foreign combat troops would leave Afghanistan in late 2014.The Afghan government itself seeks to improve the security of a number of areas and demonstrate their abilities in that regard.
Reporters from the BBC said although the number of victims of attacks in the country increased, but the security forces also continue to increase the number of military and police forces to maintain the security in some places. It is estimated, there are about 10 thousand soldiers and policemen who have just been recruited to guard the territory of Afghanistan. Nevertheless, journalists in the country doubt the ability of Afghan army and police in dealing with security problems that will happen. It is feared that they will not be able to face the onslaught of Taliban forces, which is estimated going to occur this summer.
