Jan Pepijn Servaas : Exclusives CIA Chief Breaks Silence: Pakistan Would Have Jeopardized bin Laden Raid, "Impressive" Intel Captured
In his first interview since commanding the mission to kill Osama bin Laden, CIA chief Leon Panetta tells TIME that U.S. officials feared that Pakistan could have undermined the operation by leaking word to its targets. Long before Panetta ordered Vice Admiral William McRaven, head of the Joint Special Forces Command, to undertake the mission at 1:22 p.m. on Friday, the CIA had been gaming out how to structure the raid. Months prior, the U.S. had considered expanding the assault to include coordination with other countries, notably Pakistan. But the CIA ruled out participating with its nominal South Asian ally early on because "it was decided that any effort to work with the Pakistanis could jeopardize the mission. They might alert the targets, "Panetta says.
The U.S. also considered running a high-altitude bombing raid from B-2 bombers or launching a "direct shot" with cruise missiles but ruled out those options because of the possibility of "too much collateral", Panetta says. The direct-shot option was still on the table as late as last Thursday as the CIA and then the White House grappled with how much risk to take on the mission. Waiting for more intelligence also remained a possibility.
On Tuesday, Panetta assembled a group of 15 aides to assess the credibility of the intelligence they had collected on the compound in Abbottabad where they believed bin Laden was hiding. They had significant "circumstantial evidence" that bin Laden was living there, Panetta says -- the residents burned their trash and had extraordinary security measures -- but American satellites had not been able to photograph bin Laden or any members of his family. The Tuesday meeting included team leaders from the CIA's counterterrorism center, the special-activities division (which runs covert operations for the agency) and officials from the office of South Asian analysis.
Panetta wanted to get those aides' opinions on the potential bin Laden mission, and he quickly found a lack of unanimity among his team. Some of the aides had been involved in the Carter Administration's effort to go after the hostages held by the Iranians 30 years ago, others had been involved in the ill-fated "BLACK HAWK DOWN" raid against Somali warlords in 1993. "What if you go down and you're in a firefight and the Pakistanis show up and start firing?" Panetta says some worried. "How do you fight your way out?"
But Panetta concluded that the evidence was strong enough to risk the raid, despite the fact that his aides were only 60%-80% confident that bin Laden was there, and decided to make his case to the President. At the key Thursday meeting in which President Obama heard the arguments from his top aides on whether or not to go into Pakistan to kill or capture bin Laden, Panetta admitted that the evidence of bin Laden's presence at the compound was circumstantial. But “when you put it all together, "Panetta says he told the room, "We have the best evidence since (the 2001 battle of) Tora Bora (where bin Laden was last seen), and that then makes it clear that we have an obligation to act."
Obama decided that Panetta's arguments trumped two other options: striking the compound remotely or waiting until more evidence was available to prove bin Laden was there. "If I thought delaying this could in fact produce better intelligence, that would be one thing,” Panetta says he argued, "but because of the nature of the security at the compound, we're probably at a point where we’ve got the best intelligence we can get."
For weeks, Panetta had been pushing the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to try to get photographic confirmation of the presence of the bin Laden family. "NGA was terrific at doing analysis on imagery of that compound," he says, "but I kept struggling to say, "Can't you at least try to get one of the people that looks like (bin Laden)?" NGA produced photographs of the two couriers and their families that McRaven's Navy Seal team used to identify players in the compound as they made their way toward bin Laden.
Panetta only learned that the President had been convinced by his arguments on Friday, when Obama said he was authorizing the helicopter mission and made his order official in a signed letter. After he received the order, Panetta told McRaven of the President's decision and instructed him to launch. He told him the mission was "to go in there (and) get bin Laden, and if bin Laden isn't there, get the hell out!"
CIA officials turned a windowless seventh-floor conference room at Langley into a command center for the mission, and Panetta watched the operation unfold from there. As he and his team waited for McRaven to report on whether bin Laden was indeed at the compound, Panetta says the room was tense. "I kept asking Bill McRaven, "O.K., what the hell's this mean?" and when McRaven finally said they had ID'd "GERONIMO", the mission code name for bin Laden, "All the air we were holding came out," Panetta says. When the helicopters left the compound 15 minutes later, the room broke into applause.
The aftermath of the mission has been productive. The U.S. collected an "impressive amount" of material from bin Laden's compound, including computers and other electronics, Panetta says. Panetta has set up a task force to act on the fresh intelligence. Intelligence reporting suggests that one of bin Laden's wives who survived the attack has said the family had been living at the compound since 2005, a source tells TIME.
That will raise questions about the Pakistani government’s possible awareness of bin Laden's location in recent years. But one of Panetta's predecessors says this can work to U.S. advantage. "It opens up some opportunities for us with Pakistan," says John McLaughlin, former deputy CIA chief. "They now should feel under some great pressure to be cooperative with us on the remaining issues," like going after the Taliban elsewhere in the country. "It's called leverage."

OSAMA & OBAMA
by Cisca Zarmansyah
Barack Obama announced to the world that Osama Bin Laden's death is the world's victory over terrorism. And, for the umpteenth time Obama insisted that his war against terrorism --- especially to Osama's network --- is not a war against Islam.
Is it true that the world has won the war against terrorism because it has successfully killed an Osama Bin Laden who was hunted for 10 years? If I am asked, then my answer is, "Not yet!"
Terrorism has been believed to be a new world war. The terrorists appear from time to time. One was killed, the others would present.
Osama bin Laden is phenomenal because of the ability of extraordinary rapid regeneration with extraordinary support of personal financial. He successfully combined the financial capabilities with social frustration and the glory of Jihad struggle. This ability is what causes the admirers of Osama are scattered throughout the hemisphere. They think that Osama is not only a figure of opposition leader, but also a tantalizing ideology.
Speaking about Osama can't be released from talks about the United States. There is a strong causal relationship between Obama and Osama. Osama was "a sweet boy" who ever raised by America when arming the Afghan people against Soviet occupation. When the Soviet Union had expelled, Osama felt abandoned by the America, so he turned to against the Obama's country.
The great rivalry between Osama and the United States then justified the acts of violence. In the name of terrorism or for the sake of killing Osama, the Obama's country confirmed all acts of violence in any country throughout the world. And, Osama was the same. On behalf of hatred to America, all forms of violence were regarded as legitimate.
The hostilities between Osama and Obama splits the world into a dangerous polarization between East and West. That is what causes many people claim the terrorism is a new world war. It's the enemy of the world, especially since the terrorist killed the innocent people. But, this world, especially America, really doesn't learn from the war against terrorism itself, that the violence would only bear the subsequent violence.
Therefore, the terrorism should be approached to the most important trigger. That's the injustice (local and global) that inflame the frustration of prolonged. This is the world duty, especially to Obama, who now leads the U.S. as the sole champion of the world.

Lakshmi Lavanya : C, I think the death of Osama Bin Laden doesn't mean that Al-Qaeda has been destroyed. Although we, in Malaysia have not found a branch of terrorism, but Malaysia still improve preparedness to deal with radical elements of the retaliation a...gainst Bin Laden's death. The whole world knows that Bin Laden will continue to be a major element of radical elements. But the terrorist act in Islam carry a name that is not good. As a Muslim country, their actions can't be accepted.
Jan Pepijn Servaas: I'm sure you still remember in early May 2007, Tehran hosted the seminar that discussed the actual transformation of Islamic world today. The seminar that was held for two days and attended by scientists from 28 countries had the theme "Islamic World: Victims of Terrorism". They examined several important points, including the reasons why the West accused the Muslims as terrorists and Islam as a religion of the anarchist thought.
Despite the propaganda has also been launched by the West since the past, but after the attacks of 11 September 2001, the propaganda is now more aggressive and the Western media increasingly persistent in its efforts to impress the ugliness of the Islamic world.
So before we talk about terrorism, its definition should be mentioned first. Unfortunately, many definitions of terrorism are actually contradictory. A number of seminar participants argued that the absence of a single definition of terrorism (which can be accepted by all parties) proved to be exploited by the West to interpret the terrorism arbitrary. Thus, the West is free to convict anyone and any country as terrorists if they are not in line with their interests.
Almira Izzati : Terrorism does not recognize the target, even they are willing to sacrifice themselves. Anyone can suddenly die and lost everything. It's hard to explain terrorism because it can be consistently interpreted and defined differently, with the different elements of time and circumstances. At one time, the terrorists could be the heroes.
Adriaan Zef : This is what happens due to a rejection of modernity and secularization posed by the ideology of democracy. Philosophy of democracy that is still loved can't always bring the peace commitments.
I wonder how Democracy would actually be the trigger of the rise of Islamic fundamentalism? They do that by using the pretext of patriotism and religious spirit. Do they consider it is a stupid thing? If the answer is yes, then I'll bet, until whenever the two ideologies of democracy and Islam will never achieve the peace.
Valentino Vie: I just want to add your literacy content, baby. In history, terrorism often used the phrase on the basis of analytical political, racial, ethnic and even religious. But it can't be categorized as a war, because the recognized war is a war that qualify according to the Geneva Conventions. In the perspective of analytical philosophy of language, the Belligerendi must submit to the Language Games in war. Theoretically, the war has the certain physical targets or limited, while terrorism has the undiscriminated goals (infinite). The fall of innocent human victims is the war excess, while in terrorism is precisely the target. Normally, the target consists of "Main Target" which determines the winning and losing of war.
Second is the "Between Target" which must be mastered in order to facilitate the achievement of principal objectives. The "Main Target" in war is to destroy the physical strength of its opponent and the "Between Target" is the psychological or psychiatric aspects of its opponent. "Main Target" is to seize the psychological advantage while the "Between Target" is the opposite of physical strength.
In terrorism, "The principal objective" is to take takes the advantage of psychological or mental problems, while "Between Target" is the physical strength of its opponent. By law, the war is subject to the Geneva Conventions, so that the war is conventional. Because terrorism is not bound to any law, then terrorism can be categorized as the unconventional war.
*****
(V-P-PDV/CLA511A )
Cisca Zarmansyah :Which unconventional war, monsieur? Unlike the nuclear biological chemical warfare which is a physical war, terrorism is the Philosophy war. As religious beliefs, the philosophical thinking will bring a person, group or nation to something of civilization. Therefore, terrorism is a war that stems from civilization problems. Huntington (1993 ►:: http://www.thoughtcast.org/casts/samuel-huntington/) states that the world is now going on clash of civilizations. Of course, his signalement was generating the controversy among scholars of the world. But it turned out, both Osama bin Laden and George W. Bush declared that terrorism and war against terrorism was indeed the result of civilizations clash.
Pranay Suresh :You're right, Maam. About the financial support, we can't regard lightly the Urine Management Business in Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia. The companies that master this business is owned by Osama Bin Laden's family, the Saudi Bin Laden Corporation. They manage nearly 50,000 workers. This is the business of "sweet" urine. ...
Fairuz Azalia :Admittedly, the interpretation of Jihad as long as these tend to be connotative, in a sense it is always translated and flashed as the use of the force against non-Muslims. Translation of Jihad becomes "holy war" when combined with Western views of Islam as a "Sword Religion", is clearly has reduced the substantially and spiritual meaning of Jihad, and changes its connotation. Moreover, if the terminology of it is confronted on human rights values, of course, it will increasingly reinforce the West assumption that Islam is synonymous with "the sharpness of the sword".
Adriaan Zef : Remember this hon, the terrorists can't avoid themselves from the use of advanced technology results which is found based on modernity values that they reject it. The peace in the world is not likely to happen if there is the universal concepts that paradox in the international community. For such circumstances will always trigger the crash that reap the terrorism. The orderliness and peace of people will only be achieved if the thesis of democracy at practical level can accomplished ethically, and universal Islamic concept can be accomplished moderately on practical level.
Cisca Zarmansyah : In each dialogue, both parties must be changed, BB. This is about dialectics. In the thesis process, antithesis and synthesis that becomes a new thesis, each party to deny or to correct each other. But the mutual denial doesn't mean the mutual negation. The truth of each position is cleared of wrong aspects. That's the life antithesis from denying the thesis truth, and synthesis of maintaining the truth of rejected antithesis position.
Adriaan Zef : I keep thinking of your words, to my minds take me in a daydream when I read your comment. Hon, you --- are really --- not as easy as most people think!
Okay, at least, their ontological belief in God the Almighty is identical. All parties equally refer to something the same belief, the "Existing", which is above the everything. As a subject, Osama and Bush always insert the name of God in their expression, as a sign of their recognition of the "Existing". It suggests that international terrorists today are precisely the adherents of religion.
Cisca Zarmansyah : Yes, BB. Nevertheless, they also must be able to perform the categorization (distinction) on the criminals and not the criminals.
Cisca Zarmansyah : Controversy about the details of Osama Bin Laden's death surfaced yesterday. Navy Pillay questioned to US a few facts relating to the death of Osama BL. Between Islam And The West after May 111
by Cisca Zarmansyah
The relationship between Islam and the West deteriorated again after Osama Bin Laden (OBL) was shot dead by U.S. elite forces and buried in the sea. Many Muslims condemned the action. At the same time, almost all elements of U.S. and Western nations "feast" for the killing of OBL.
We could say Obama has destroyed the relationship between Islam and the West perfectly. As is understandable, the acts of terror carried out OBL in the U.S. in 2001 has destroyed the relationship between Islam and the West. After the tragedy, Muslims living in Western countries often become targets of discrimination action, ranging from things that are social privacy (such as wearing the hijab) up in the terms of worship/ritual.
Meanwhile, in Muslim world arised the anger and hatred that is no less great against the West, especially after the U.S. with its allies attacked Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003). This is evident from the widespread protests in the West condemn the Islamic world, even terrorist acts were often addressed to the symbol of Western countries, especially the U.S..
Now, after OBL was shot dead, the tensions between Islam and the West (more or less the same) have the potential to happen again. Moreover, the burial (more precisely is throwing) OBL's corpse to the sea is considered by some Muslims as an affront to Islam.
As the U.S. president, Obama is actually aware of the sensitivity of OBL issues for relations between Islam and the West. This can be seen clearly from his repeatedly statements that the actions taken by the U.S. against terrorist groups (especially OBL) is not intended to insult Islam. Even in many different occasions, Obama repeatedly stressed that he has a great respect for Islam. In other words, Obama does not want the killing of OBL (who allegedly masterminded the attack of 9/11) damage the relations between Islam and the West. Because, if that happens, then Obama will face its consequences, since he has determined to embrace and improve relations between U.S. and Islamic world.
However, Obama seemed have to admit his failure in the effort to save that relationship, especially after White House officials decided to throw OBL corpse into the sea.
In my opinion, the act of throwing his corpse into the sea makes Obama helpless between two great powers. The first strength is the U.S people aspiration and the White House officials who hold their grudges because of 911 tragedy. Viewed from the perspective of victims as perceived by the American people, then all actions to condemn OBL could be considered legitimate, including by throwing his corpse into the sea. But the action seemed more reflect the strategic considerations rather than the spirit of revenge. It is probable that White House officials intend to eradicate the influence and power of OBL, because if OBL is buried as usual, then the supporters and sympathizers can visit and close ranks to continue the struggle for the OBL terrorism. Even his cemetery can be treated in a mystical, and it gave birth to a far greater energy than he's still alive.
The second strength is the Muslims aspirations are being the target of reconciliation politic by Obama to improve relations between Islam and the U.S.. Unlike the U.S people aspirations and White House officials, some Muslims feel insulted by dumping OBL corpse into the sea, because in Islamic doctrine, the dead people must always be respected, no matter how great their sins during the life. Moreover, his religion has been tolerated as Islam, even he was regarded as a Muslim warrior by his followers.
That is what provoked the anger some Muslims after OBL's death (and his corpse was thrown into the sea). This anger is evident from the rise of protests criticizing the U.S.. Even a number of Islamic universities which is known moderates, like Al Azhar in Egypt, also condemned the act of throwing the OBL corpse to the sea.
In future, the action of some Muslims anger against the U.S. (especially Obama) will be greater, because of fatal error committed by White House officials in burying OBL corpse to the sea, along with their other fatal error, such as the intervention to Libya & Syria's internal affairs. Meanwhile, Obama's commitment to embrace the Islam world is nothing more than just the wind gusts, never comes true until now. The United States was still attacking the Libya, kept pounding the Afghanistan and continued to coddle the Israel.
All parties should be proporsional against OBL's death with all their expressions. Muslims are not supposed to defend him and hate the West excessively. However, Bin Laden has done a very evil act condemned by Islam. From the perspective of Islam, OBL was deserved to receive punishment as severe as he has killed thousands of innocent people. Conversely, the West is also not supposed to celebrate his death excessively to offend the Muslims. The separation effort between OBL as the terrorist and the Muslim (as stated by Obama) should always be disclosed. Thus, the Muslims realize that all the West actions and euphoria against Bin Laden's death is conducted within the context of Bin Laden as the terrorist, not as the Muslim.
The attitudes like this are absolutely necessary proportionally by both parties, especially in facing the threat of terrorism and Bin Laden followers, so that it does not become counterproductive that will give birth to a new generation of OBL, here and there, everywhere.
Terrorism doesn't lead to Western countries only, but also to the Islam world. Islam and the West are both anti-terrorism, and both had been the terrorism victims. It is appropriate if both parties cooperate and coordinate to face of terrorism as a common enemy, rather than hating each other due to excessive attitude in celebrating the "Momentary Victory " against the terrorism network.

Almira Izzati : Well, his actions were very, very can't be excused, but it's not too wise for us to be excited because of a human death. In any religion teaches that we are not permitted to rejoice over the death of someone. We should hate his deeds, but we do not have to hate him. If Osama is really dead, it helps us to pray for him. This statement is not to defend bin Laden, but it is not wise if we are happy for someone's death. There's good we think that with his death does not mean the terrorism will end. It's better not to have fun but stay alert, because his accomplices still at large and we do not know the existence of them all.
Almira Izzati : (Reuters) - Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden will have to answer to God for having killed many people and exploiting religion to spread hate, the Vatican said on Monday. Spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said that while Christians "do not rejoice" over a death, it serves to remind them of "each person's responsibility before God and men."
"Osama bin Laden, as everyone knows, had the grave responsibility of having spread division and hate among people, causing the deaths of an innumerable number of people and exploiting religion for these purposes," he said. The Vatican has often condemned the concept of violence in God's name. Lombardi also said the Vatican hoped that the death of bin Laden "would not be an occasion for more hate, but for peace."

Fairuz Azalia : Izti, of course this kind of appeal is contrary to most psychotherapy situation - not to say all - of the countries leaders in the world. Very different from Lombardi's call is a call from David Cameron when he said, "The news about Osama bin Laden's death would bring relief to communities worldwide."
Almira Izzati : Fairuz, for me, this is where the basic values of Christian who tries to build a culture of living together by "sheathe the sword", not to "depend on the sword" .
Adriaan Zef : I know, no party is not over, but the excitement during the party, well, ...why not?
Jan Pepijn Servaas : Will Al Qaeda (eventually) be damned like what has been called by George Bush as "the graveyard of history that does not have a tombstone from the lies that have been wasted"?
Valentino Vie: Hey Jan, your question depends not on the West, but in the Islamic world, because they who make the choice to result in marginalizing Al Qaeda and its "bin Ladenisme".
The genetics of groups like Al Qaeda are the seeds of long-term destruction of their own, because they have four strategic weakness, and that is crippling. First, their victims are often among the civilian population of Muslims themselves. Second, Al Qaeda and its allies do not offer a positive vision for the future. Third, the militants are not able to turn themselves into a genuine mass political movements, because their ideology prevents them from making the real-world compromises that would enable them to engage in normal political. Fourth, the militants continued to expand the list of their enemies, including any Muslim who does not have a world view like them.
Al Qaeda said that they opposed all Middle Eastern regimes, Shia, most Western countries, Jews and Christians, the India government, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Russia, most news organizations, United Nations, and non-governmental organizations. To have the world as enemy will never be the Victory strategy.
Jan Pepijn Servaas : I agree with you, Vincent. Many Muslims admire him because he was "challenged" the West, but that does not mean they want to live in his grim utopia.
Adriaan Zef : Do you know what was the main political complaints from bin Laden? It was the U.S. military presence in large scale in Saudi Arabia, and it was over in 2003, but bin Laden has never recognized the change. To satisfy the demands of political would involve the elimination of all American influence in Muslim world, the destruction of Israel, the overthrow of any regime of Middle East, the India playback of Kashmir, the installation of Taliban regime in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the termination of any democratic elections in Islamic world, etc.
