Today's African Proverb : "When the hyena is gone, the dog begins to bark"- An Ethiopian proverb sent by Yanet, New Jersey, United States

What is the meaning of their bark? Warning? Anxiety? Expression of the spirit? To attract attention? Or bored? Glad to see you go? Please do not go? Go? Go ahead, will you be back again? Ehehhe .... I was reminded of the story when I was a child.

Quechan Indian tribes have some interesting stories. One story of this tribe is about the origin of why the dogs bark. According to them, in ancient times the dog could talk such as human. The dogs were able to express their opinion. The dogs stayed with their employer. Because the dogs loved to talk, then they became the creatures which loved gossip. They could not even keep a secret though.

The Indian concerned to see their attitude. They prayed to their god, "O Lord, hear our prayer. You must take action against them  who like to gossip. They can not be trusted, because there is no any secret that they can save. "

The dogs were actually listening to their employer prayer, but they still did not want to change their habits. They were even more keen to gossip

One morning an old Indian had just woken from his sleep. He then hit his dog, because his dog fell asleep at night. The old Indian man then said, "Go now! Go and say to everyone that I beat you!"

The dog just looked at his master without a word. Old Indian man was surprised because his dog's behavior was different from usual. He then tried to whisper something to his dog and told the dog to go to tell his whispered secret. The dog was still looking at him and the dog suddenly barked, "Woof, woof, woof ..."

Since then the dogs lose their brilliance to speak like humans. Until now, the Quechan tribal elders always told their children, "Use wisely your power of speech, if not you will only be able to bark."

Al-Nakba - Episode 1. "The Nakba did not begin in 1948. Its origins lie over two centuries ago...."
So begins this four-part series on the 'nakba', meaning the 'catastrophe', about the history of the Palestinian exodus that led to the first Arab-Israeli War in 1948 and the establishment of the state of Israel. This sweeping history starts back in 1799 with Napoleon's attempted advance into Palestine to check British expansion and his appeal to the Jews of the world to reclaim their land in league with France. The narrative moves through the 19th century and into the 20th century with the British Mandate in Palestine and comes right up to date in the 21st century and the ongoing 'nakba' on the ground.  Arab, Israeli and Western intellectuals, historians and eye-witnesses provide the central narrative which is accompanied by archive material and documents, many only recently released for the first time.
