► Benazir Bhutto's son makes democracy pledge in Pakistan. 28 December 2012 - The son of Pakistan's murdered ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has promised to fight militancy to maintain democracy, in his first major political speech. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari told party supporters, who had gathered to mark five years since his mother's death, that she "sacrificed her life to uphold democracy". Jonathan Josephs reports. Obama seeks deal as US 'fiscal cliff' looms. Published on Dec 27, 2012 :: President Barack Obama has cut short his holiday and was returning to Washington as no deal appeared in sight to avoid the year-end "fiscal cliff" of higher taxes and deep spending cuts that could spin the still-fragile economy back into a recession. The US treasury secretary warned on Thursday that the government would hit its borrowing limit on Monday, the final day of the year. Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports from Washington D.C.
