Recent attacks on NATO troopsled by the United States occurred on Saturday (9/29). An Afghan soldier fired his gun toward a group of U.S. troops on the border in Wardak province, eastern Afghanistan. The incident killed two U.S. soldiers and at least two Afghan soldiers.

The incident shows the trend of increased attacks against the U.S. and NATO troops by Afghan policemen and soldiers they have trained.

Total 2000 U.S. soldiers have been killed since the US-led the international forces invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001. In addition, based on data Icasualties there are about 1190 coalition troops were killed in Afghanistan.

According to the index published by the Brookings Institution, 40.2% of deaths due to poor explosive devices. Most of the deaths occurred after 2009, when President Obama ordered additional 33 thousand troops to combat the growing Taliban activity. The second largest cause of death was hostile fire which reached 30.6%.

Michael O'Hanlon from Brookings Institution said, even with the 33 thousand American troops back to their country, there will still be 108 thousand coalition troops in Afghanistan. A total of 68 thousand of them are Americans.

They are assigned to train the Afghan National Army wh0 will replace their duty to maintain security there. But the number of attacks by Afghan soldiers and police or militia disguised as Afghan soldiers have eroded trust between the coalition and its partners. During the year more than 50 foreign soldiers were killed in the fire.

O'Hanlon assessed the war in Afghanistan has been maintained for too long. "Judging from the history of war, actually the figures of death is fairly common, but still, death is a tragedy and 11 years is too long, "he said.

Ahead of presidential elections in the U.S., there is a challenge for the U.S. government. "They have to remind the American people why the campaign (Afghanistan war) should be maintained." said O'Hanlon.
