Kavkazcente 30 April 2012 : Angel or hero? An interesting video clip recorded in Syria has been posted on the Internet. The video shows a wounded man who lays on a road. People are hiding and can not approach him as the street is shelled by the Alawites. There are shouts, and people rushing around, not knowing how to help the wounded. At this moment, a person in completely white clothes appears at the background. He behaves unnaturally quiet and shows no emotions.   The man in white approaches the wounded man (whose weight is not less than 80 kg.) slowly, without quickening his steps, and calmly, without a visible effort, picks him up. Then he carries the wounded man with one hand only and brings to the crowd of people. After that, he disappears in the video. As pointed out by the witnesses of the incident, the unidentified person was dressed in impeccably white robe, which obviously does not dock with the situation of war, dirt, dust, incessant shellings and destruction. Sources in Syria say that this was not the only case when witnesses saw some persons in white clothes, who participated in battles against the Alawites and helped Muslims. This story is just one of those rare occasions when such incidents were videotaped. The Muslims are asking: Who are these persons - angels or heroes? SANDS OF IWO JIMA. Nominated for 4 Oscars. Another 1 win.  John Marion Stryker is the ultimate Marine, a tough rifle squad leader who in 1943 is assigned a squad of new recruits saddled with three veterans and an old enemy of Stryker's from previous duties in the Far East. One recruit in particlar is a source of friction with Stryker, Peter Conway, whose father was Stryker's CO at Guadalcanal and who felt his son was too soft and cowardly to be a Marine. The squad grows more and more resentful at Stryker's increasingly brutal training regimen and his lack of sympathy for the varied personal problems of the recruits, but his determination to mold them into fighting men helps save their lives when the squad is landed at Tarawa in November 1943 and Stryker risks his life to blow up a Japanese bunker that has slaughtered Marines trapped at a log wall. The now battle-tested squad becomes more closely-knit and Stryker's relationship with the men warms as the squad eventually finds itself in the bloodiest island battle of the war, at Iwo Jima. Our War: Ambushed. As a prior-service U.S. Marine currently serving in the U.S. Army, I found this doc to be an eye opener. Chronicling the exploits of the British 1st Battalion Royal Anglian as captured by the Soldiers themselves, the footage shot by these men was only recently declassified by the MoD. It has since been compiled to tell their story via a BBC documentary series titled "Our War". Watch. Reel. Learn. Dedicated to the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian, the International Security Assistance Force, and those who did not make it home. Uploaded on Jun 17, 2011 by Bryan Ott.

BBC HARDtalk - Femi Kuti - Nigerian musician and political activist (9/7/12). As Africa's most populous nation and one of its biggest oil producers, Nigeria is a giant on the African stage. But in terms of prosperity it has never fulfilled the expectations of its people.

Zeinab Badawi talks to musician and political activist Femi Kuti, son of the late, legendary musician Fela Kuti. He is a constant thorn in the side of the authorities and uses his songs to criticise government and speak up on behalf of the poor and dispossessed. But with fantastic rates of growth in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa, is Femi Kuti being overly pessimistic about Nigeria's prospects?

Kew reorders collection of seven million plants. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the world's first DNA Bank for plants. Based at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, it was the start of efforts around the world to use DNA sequencing to probe the genetic secrets of the world of flora. Two decades on, and new technology has transformed botany - turning what we thought we knew about plants on its head, as well as paving the way for new technologies such as GM and genomics.  But the findings have led to some plants being re-categorised according to their DNA rather than their appearance, and for links to be made between plants that were previously thought to be unrelated. All of that has meant that Kew's seven million preserved plant specimens have had to be reorganised - no small task. Video Journalist: Tom Beal. Some stills courtesy Kew Gardens.

Today's African Proverb : "Advice is a stranger - if he is welcome, he stays for the night; if not, he leaves the same day" - A Malagasy proverb sent by Lasu Morris, Juba, South Sudan

Welcome, advice. A cleric dies, leaving a question, "I always advise people, but who will advise me?"

Putin says no Stalinist tendencies in society, confirms Berezovsky's letters
Russian 'smokers' rights' movement holds founding convention
Oh, right to smoke? Sounds democratic, is not it? Okay. You want to die because of smoking? Go ahead! Die from the toxins in cigarette smoke is the choice of your life, not our business. But believe me, your phrase will be broken by the right of our right to a healthy life: smoke-free.

Putin on Boston blasts: We suffered from terrorists, called 'insurgents' by West. The deadly bombing of Boston Marathon confirms Russia's position that terrorists are a common threat to all nations and must never be supported for political gains, says Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin was commenting in Moscow during his annual Q&A session on the flood of comments in the US, many of them from common people, which blamed Russia, where the suspects in the bombing were born, over the crime.

ehehehe ...Such a scenario is typical American style. Beware of that, Russia! Actually the U.S. respects you. Its problem is it does not know how to put itself beside you.

Insult to Injury: UK's disabled must 'prove' handicaps to get benefits. Life as a disabled person in Britain could soon become a lot harder. They're now being asked to prove, face to face, that they deserve the help that until recently had been taken for granted.

People & Power - America's War Games. The United States' military expenditures today account for about 40 percent of the world total. In 2012, the US spent some $682bn on its military - an amount more than what was spent by the next 13 countries combined. Now that the war in Iraq is over and the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan will be complete in 2014, the stage might therefore appear to be set for a decrease in US defence spending. Even in Washington DC, many have argued that the defence budget can be cut substantially and the resulting "peace dividend" could be diverted to more pressing domestic concerns, such as dealing with the nation's continuing economic problems.

George W Bush's presidential library, museum and policy centre has opened in Dallas, Texas. All modern-day presidents have been honoured with such libraries in their home states, including Richard Nixon, whose library draws about 100,000 visitors a year with its exhibits and research opportunities. The complex, which opened in 1991, is built around the thirty-seventh president's childhood home in southern California. Nixon is best remembered for the Watergate scandal, an illegal spying operation on his political enemies, and the cover-up that followed, events extensively dealt with in the library's exhibits.  Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from California. ||Bush Waterboarding

Watch Christopher Hitchens Get Waterboarded (VANITY FAIR). How does it feel to be "aggressively interrogated"? Christopher Hitchens found out for himself, submitting to a brutal waterboarding session in an effort to understand the human cost of America's use of harsh tactics at Guantánamo and elsewhere. VF.com has the footage. Uploaded on Jul 2, 2008 by Vanity Fair

Guantanamo Bay interrogation video released - 15 July 08. Lawyers for a Canadian prisoner held at Guantanamo Bay have released a videotape showing him being interrogated. The pictures offer the first glimpse inside the secretive and isolated US prison in Cuba. In the video, a Canadian Security Intelligence Services agent is shown grilling Omar Khadr in 2003, when he was 15. The video shows him weeping, his face buried in his hands. Khadr also tells his captors he's been tortured. The Canadian citizen is accused of throwing a grenade that killed a US soldier during a 2002 firefight in Afghanistan. Al Jazeera's Dan Nolan tells the story. || Inside Story Americas - Has torture become acceptable? The European Court of Human Rights condemns CIA torture and members of the US Senate intelligence committee calls it "a terrible mistake". But will such criticism be overshadowed by a film that falsely suggests that the use of torture led to the killing of Osama bin Laden?

Putin fields questions during annual phone-in. Russia's President Vladimir Putin has been speaking to the nation in one of the live televised question and answer sessions that have become a trademark of his presidency. Almost two million people sent in questions to the president, with many tackling him on Russia's current economic issues. Al Jazeera's David Chater has been gauging the reaction in Russia's eastern outpost Vladivostok.

The Stream - Water wars?

Inside Story - The fight for global vaccinations. Global vaccination programmes are offering children a better start in life. It is universally recognised as one of the most successful and cost effective health programmes in the world. Immunising children against a range of diseases that can cause serious illness, disability or death. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that immunisation prevents up to three million deaths every year, but it says an estimated 22 million children worldwide are missing out on basic vaccines.

You tired to curb the passions and to endure the pain. Also waiting for the changes you want. I understand how scratched your heart. And how your self-esteem trampled. Thrown out. Those who embrace you when you are needed. However, compassion touches me. In your weary you stand tall. Although as wasted, you are calm and silent like coral. In your silence, still upright. Like sheer cliffs that often you rock. Abstinence cry if you do not need it. Although cornered you keep waiting. Stoic. Smiling while injured.

My tigress, they will burst when you are cornered. However, keep patient, conquer yourself. Don't be afraid. Even if you know that they are allied. Because one day the mountain will explode. Even the smallest mountain. And, at that time they will know how ferocious a wounded tiger if her revenge is fueled. Therefore my beautiful tiger, uprise again. Running and clawing this cruel life. And do not complain. Keep the spirit.

***

Q : What is this, Cisca? Do you imagine learning as a tigress?
A : Nope. This is a poem by Reinhold Messner posted by him to me. When reading it I was reminded to you, tigress.

"Thank you for your perception! I like your romantic side, even if I do not always comment and I'm glad that you're in my circle of friends."
(Courtesies by: Wolfgang A. Gerhardt)

Wolfgang A.Gerhardt : May be you like this Sunday collage

Cisca Zarmansyah : Before today, there never was a person doing this to me. You create a simple matter to look special. This is a special thing for me.

Cisca Zarmansyah : Thank you. I love it. I love you, my friend.

CieL- FreYa Ceastle : Hmm, he's so nice...

"I am me.
In all the world,
there is no one else exactly like me.
Everything that comes out of me
is authentically mine,
because I alone chose it --
I own everything about me:
my body,
my feelings,
my mouth,
my voice,
all my actions,
whether they be to others or myself.
I own my fantasies,
my dreams,
my hopes,
my fears.
I own my triumphs and successes,
all my failures and mistakes.
Because I own all of me,
I can become intimately acquainted with me.
By so doing,
I can love me
and be friendly with all my parts.
I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me,
and other aspects that I do not know
-- but as long as I am friendly
and loving to myself,
I can courageously and hopefully
look for solutions
to the puzzles and ways
to find out more about me.
However I look and sound,
whatever I say and do,
and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time
is authentically me.
If later some parts of how I looked,
sounded,
thought,
and felt
turn out to be unfitting,
I can discard that which is unfitting,
keep the rest,
and invent something new
for that which I discarded.
I can see,
hear,
feel,
think,
say, and do.
I have the tools to survive,
to be close to others,
to be productive,
and to make sense
and order out of the world of people
and things outside of me.
I own me,
and therefore,
I can engineer me.
I am me,
and I am okay."
