Bersani favourite as Italian election nears. Pier Luigi Bersani, a cigar-chomping former communist, is tipped to become Italy's next prime minister after legislative elections on Feb 24-25. Published on Feb 18, 2013 by AFP || AFP in My older post on 19 February 2013

Italy votes in general election as Europe watches and waits. Italians are going to the polls on Sunday to vote in a general election that threatens to reverberate around Europe. Markets are watching nervously to see whether a government emerges that is strong enough to end the country's recession and avoid aggravating the eurozone's debt crisis.

The marginal favourite, Pier Luigi Bersani, has suggested he wants to form an alliance even if his centre-left Democratic Party wins a majority - to strengthen the government and curry favour with financial markets.

Four-times prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi is not standing himself but his campaigning has boosted support for his People of Freedom party. It has also marked a revival in the fortunes of the man who stepped aside in 2011 as Italy faced financial meltdown.

The result is made even less certain by the presence of the maverick Beppe Grillo, whose colourful denunciation of the traditional parties has captured people's imaginations and produced the biggest final election rally on Friday.

Impressive to many in government but disappointing in the campaign, Mario Monti is leading a centrist coalition. It is thought he may have a future role in a government headed by Bersani. Published on Feb 24, 2013 by Euronews

Inside Syria - The female factor. Women make up half of Syria's population, yet they are often invisible in the political and media discussions taking place since the conflict began two years ago. Inside Story Americas - Haiti: Victimising the victims?

Listening Post - Spies, secrets and Israeli media. This week we focus on Israel and the story about one prisoner that revealed multiple layers of censorship. Prisoner X was a suspected Mossad operative-turned-double agent who, in 2010, reportedly committed suicide in an Israeli jail. In cases deemed too sensitive or a threat to national security, the Israeli government can issue gag orders that prevent the media from covering the story, which is what it did in the case of Prisoner X. But on February 12, the Australian network ABC News released a report revealing the prisoners real name - Ben Zygier -- and details of his time in Israel. Grappling to contain the story, the Israeli government issued another gag order to prevent the Israeli media from citing international coverage. But with the story accessible to Israelis via social media, the order proved defunct. To discuss what this case reveals about Israeli censorship in the age of new media, we speak with Ian Black, the Middle East editor for The Guardian; Ronen Bergman, the senior correspondent for Military and Intelligence Affairs for the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper; Tehilla Shwartz Altshuler, the head of Media Reform project at Israel Democracy Institute; and Noam Sheizaf, a journalist who writes for +972 Magazine. After Sandy, Haiti Hit With More Cholera. Hurricane Sandy hit Haiti in late October, bringing with it a rise in cholera cases. Even though the Ministry of Health's response to cholera remains inadequate, many aid organizations are leaving the country. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) runs five cholera treatment centers to respond to the epidemic and teams have increased the number of beds in order to deal with the influx of patients. At the treatment centers, patients receive oral or intravenous rehydration and the most severe cases receive antibiotics.  Published on Dec 18, 2012 by MSF

Inside Story Americas - Is the UN repackaging Haiti's cholera aid? Published on Dec 21, 2012 by AlJazeeraEnglish ( My post : 22 December 2012)

Victor Thorn American Free Press writer began his article with the question "Does the American oil companies kill hundreds of thousands of Haitians in the process of extracting the oil wells? "He also cited a statement by a social commentator and human rights lawyer Ezili Danto who argued that the process of hydraulic fracturing to be the cause of the earthquake on Jan. 12 in Haiti.

Thorn said, in essence, the main factor behind the disaster in Haiti is oil. He said, "Do you think, for what purpose 20 thousand American troops now occupy and control the weak and poor country of Haiti?"

For decades, cholera has never happened in Haiti. The disease came a few months after the January 2010 earthquake that left thousands of people homeless and living in makeshift camps. Nepalese peacekeepers who had arrived suspected of carrying cholera to Haiti.
