The Non-Aligned Movement's Crisis | by Stewart M. Patrick - August 30, 2012

The-Old-Love-Will-Blossom-Again

If we review the map of political crisis today, Syria has an almost perfect resemblance to Afghanistan by the Soviet Union era. At that time, Afghanistan became open war 'arena' for various stakeholders, especially the Soviet Union and the United States.

Two major countries are now being behind the political crisis in Syria. The U.S. along with their allies tried tirelessly to overthrow Bashar al-Assad's regime, while Russia (formerly the Soviet Union) with other countries like China and Iran are trying to maintain Bashar al-Assad's regime with a vengeance.

As had happened in Afghanistan after the war against the Soviet Union, Syria is now potentially become a new base of terrorism. On the one hand, during this time, there are a number of terrorist leaders in Syria, with a caliber such as Abu Mus'ab al-Suri as the reference terrorist for radical thought and radical terrorist groups. On the other hand, Syria -- which was hit by prolonged conflict -- has now become a place for powerful nations (such as the U.S. and Russia) to sell various types of weapons to support their respective allies.

What is currently happening in Iraq should receive serious attention from many quarters. After the invasion of the U.S. and their allies in 2003, Iraq became a new base for terrorist groups. More or less the same thing is also happening in Libya after the fall of Gaddafi and in Yemen after the resignation of Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The flare-up in Egypt's Sinai region in recent times could be another example of the establishment of terrorist bases in a conflict-torn region. Radical Salafi groups in Egypt openly took up arms against the local security. That's what made the local security forces conducted a military operation to cleanse Egypt from the terrorism elements.

At some level, it can be said that the strength of global terrorism as Al Qaeda has the same interests with the U.S. and their allies in Syria : fighting and destroying al-Assad's regime, particularly Al-Qaeda which is currently led by Ayman Al-Zawahiri. In other words, Bashar al-Assad's regime is not only opposed by the U.S. and their allies, but also by terrorist groups. This is because the Al-Assad regime often suppress the Islamic activists, even since long time ago before the wind of  revolution shook the state. Moreover, the Islamic activists who often muzzled by Al-Assad's regime) are derived from the Sunnis, whereas the large family of Al-Assad's are derived from the Shia. Thus, the Al-Qaeda's hatred of Al-Assad's regime also brought the sectarian sentiments.

That is why since the beginning of the revolution rolling, Ayman Zawahiri as the leader of Al-Qaeda has encouraged the members and sympathizers of Al-Qaeda to fight against Al-Assad's regime. Currently it is believed that the Al-Qaeda has also been in Syria to destroy Bashar al-Assad's power.

The presence of terrorist groups in Syria should be considered by all parties, especially in the context of the distribution of various kinds of assistance to strengthen their allies in Syria, particularly in terms of weaponry, intelligence operations, and others. Bashar al-Assad's regime claimed to have chemical weapons ready for use when the foreign countries come to attack. Apparently, it was considered by the U.S. and its allies. In fact, until recently the U.S. and its allies still hold back. Despite these various attempts to depose Bashar alAssad often foundered, but some White House officials warned about the dangers of terrorist groups in Syria.

Of course the U.S. is not only concerned about the use of chemical weapons against its troops by the Syrians (when the U.S. invaded the country), but also the possibility of chemical weapons falling into the terrorist groups hands. When it happens, the U.S. war against terrorist groups will become longer. It could be thousands of Americans will once again become the victims of attacks carried out by terrorists.

"A Reunion" between global terrorism group like al-Qaeda with the U.S. and their allies in Syria could be a momentum for The-Old-Love-Will-Blossom-Again. Moreover, the meeting took place on the basis of common interests and faced the same enemies as well. It is said so because Al-Qaeda (Osama bin Laden in particular) was actually former friend and protégé of the U.S. in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union times. In that era, the two reunited in the same place (Afghanistan) and for the same purpose (against the Soviets) - before finally they broke up, even become bitter enemies as they are now.

Now the two sides meet again in the same place (Syria) for roughly the same purpose, namely to fight and break the power of Bashar al-Assad's regime, which is fully supported by Russia. Syrian revolution groups have even claimed to have killed a Russian general in Syria. Instead, Bashar al-Assad's regime accused the the elements of army and intelligence of U.S. allies often helped the revolution in Syria against Assad's regime forces.

All this indicates that Russia together with its allies do not half-hearted in defense and support to deal with the Syrian revolution, which is fully supported by the United States together with its allies.

Various kinds of power - which in the Soviet Union era was directly involved in the war in Afghanistan - now involved again in semi-open warfare in Syria. Syria crisis even bring back two great enemies, which in the era of Afghanistan war were involved in a fairly intimate relationship.

But, in my opinion, the U.S. and al-Qaeda both need more mature consideration to engage in The-Old-Love-Will-Blossom-Again, since they have both the greatest treason: to attack various kinds of the U.S. power's symbol (for al-Qaeda, particularly the tragedy of 11 September 2001) and the killing of Osama bin Laden (for the U.S. and its allies). Two great betrayal - according to their version - have made them enter into the abyss of hostility.

Even if the two parties should meet and together to face a common enemy, it is almost certain that it will not happen directly, but through the "third party" which also has the same interests. Syrian Revolution group can be "third party" for the meeting of the two interests and the two groups, which are currently engaged in a major war here and there.
